Fluorescent lights come in many different varieties and the types you usually get in shops and in homes are useless for accurate colour rendition. The ones at M·A·C use special tubes which are designed to give good colour matching and simulate daylight. Some tubes like that need special control equipment inside the fitting so won't work in domestic holders. The M·A·C fluorescents certainly won't be anything like the one in your bathroom in terms of their colour spectrum.
I have a makeup mirror with two special fluorescent tubes and it's excellent but substituting one of the special tri-phosphor tubes for a regular domestic fluorescent immediately shows the difference. The domestic tube makes the face look horrible as it has a greenish tint.
