nail polish

i was just wondering how long a person should keep a bottle of nail polish before it goes funky? i am not really one to wear alot of nail polish but i do have some favorite colors that i want to keep and just get rid of the rest. but i dont know how long nail polishes keep for. i know that they are liquid and you shouldnt keep liquid based makeup pass a certain amount of time. can someone please help me out with this?

i figure it this way
a) no earthly being can open the cap without animal sacrifice to a god
b) the polish is rock hard
c) the polish is so old its a color that i am nowadays dead embarassed to say i own

I say the same as Ivy, and I'm a tech. If it's still a decent consistency, keep it. I have some polishes that were rescued 5 months after Katrina and I still wear them (mostly as my way of saying FU to her, LOL).
