Big make-up show hits Los Angeles
Colorful two-day event draws film and fashion crowds
If you’re a make-up artist, a student of make-up, a beauty product junkie, or simply intrigued by movie make-up effects, Los Angeles is where you’ll want to be on June 24 and 25. The Pasadena Convention Center will host the 10th annual International Make-Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) presented by Make-Up Artist magazine.
IMATS will welcome thousands of make-up artists and movie enthusiasts from around the world. At the event, which is open to the public, models drenched in body paint will mingle with Academy Award winners. Fashionistas will meet science-fiction fans. Superb education and networking opportunities abound. This is the 10th anniversary show, and anticipation and excitement continue to escalate.
Keynote speakers are: Oscar-winner Trefor Proud (Underworld, Kinky Boots, and Topsy-Turvy), Harry Potter wizard Nick Dudman (all Harry Potter movies, The Mummy, Batman Begins), and A-list celebrity make-up artist Paul Starr (Angelina Jolie, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Catherine Zeta-Jones). These prestigious speakers will take the stage to share advice and talk technique. They will tell anecdotes about interesting people and discuss career experiences.
The shopping at IMATS will be fantastic. The impressive exhibitor list includes Stila, Kryolan, MAC, Frends Beauty Supply, Naime’s and prominent make-up schools.
The show is highlighted by two exhilarating live competitions. The theme of the fantasy-beauty competition is A Midsummer Night’s Dream; the theme of the prosthetic character competition is Magical Beings. This is your chance to rub elbows with creatures that would have taken Shakespeare’s breath away, or who could inhabit the world of Harry Potter. Kryolan sponsors the competitions, and first prize in each category is $1,000.
The Make-Up Museum features works from world-renowned make-up artists. This is always a popular, much-photographed area of the show. You will see monsters, life-casts, and tool-kits from artists such as Rick Baker and Stuart Freeborn, characters from feature films, and more.
