Question Are there any skilled makeup artists in the Bay Area??
Hey girls! So I have a little rant as well as a question for a recommendation.

Yesterday, I went to have my makeup done for my birthday at Lancome, because last year I had it done at MAC at Valley Fair and it came out HORRIBLE. I don't know whether that particular make-up artist was just awful or what, but I just knew I didnt want to go back to them. So I figured I'd try Lancome (plus they were having an event with "professional" make up artists). But it came out AWFUL again.

I just want to find a really good makeup artist, who knows how to work with Asian eyes, and doesn't make me look like a clown. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good makeup artist in the Bay Area? (particularly San Francisco and San Jose)

Are you looking for a freelance artist or someone you can go to at a counter?! There's a lot of talent artists at my counter and a I've met a few other talented artists from other counters. The major problem I see is that customers don't explain what they want so sometimes they might not be happy with the end result.

I've never had a customer actually tell me what they want. The most they'll say is "I was a smokey eye" which means a million different things to a million different people. Make sure you let the MA know exactly what you want and tell them what colors you'd like to use too.

Yeah, the girl at Lancome was a professional, but I told her specifically what colors I wanted, but she kept pushing me to try turquoise and blues, when I told her I didn't like those colors. I don't know if maybe I'm just a pushover, but she did it anyways, and I ended up just walking away with makeup I hated.

At MAC, I brought a picture I printed off of MACcosmetics.com that had detailed descriptions of how to do the look, but she didn't know how to work with Asian eyes, so it came out looking horrible, and she didn't know how to put false eyelashes on because it came off by the time I walked to the car.

I'm looking for more of counter MAs because it's more accessible to me for events and whatnot. Which location do you work for? Maybe I never tried your location. I'm open to try again, and be EXTREMELY descriptive this time. =D

she works at the MAC counter in Bloomingdale's in downtown SF. i'm not sure what floor because there are two MAC counters in Bloomingdale's. a small counter on the 3rd floor and the bigger counter on the 1st floor.

Yea I work at on the main floor at Bloomies SF. Honestly I think ALL our artists are off the hook. And they're not the typical "MAC girls" that people like to stereotype us as haha. Everyone there is in it for the long run and they have a passion for make-up and art. If you want to come in for an appoint just PM and I'll reccomend you some of Application certified artists who are AMAZING!

Oh man...

I've never gotten my makeup done at the counter...but my friends seem to love the benefit counter (at Oakridge mall). Every other counter tends to put so much on peoples' faces that they end up looking like clowns :[.

Re: Are there any skilled makeup artists in the Bay Area??
YES!!! I'm happy to say that there are. I know the frustrations of goign to a counter and so many women like you are dissappointed. Many gals think that it will be cheaper to go to a counter, however, the counter girls are tryiong to sell you product - not their services. Soooooo that is why I became an On Location freelance makeup artist! I worked as a freelancer for MAC but I own my own company now: Pin-Ups Makeup Artistry www.pinupsmakeupartistry.com. I invite you to visit my site and email or call with any questions. and by the way, I do travel to San Jose!
Alice
