I am so familiar with the big production-small budget scale. What I really hate, though, is how most of the budget (at least for many of the ones I've done) seems to end up in things like costumes when really, it's a stage production, you don't need the hugely expensive, heavy, detailed fabrics. Fake it. I need more money for my set! Props, I can deal with, since they're smaller and I'm told I'm a dab hand at "faking" things for the stage.
And they love to skimp on makeup. Which totally doesn't work if you want bright colours and especially if you have aforementioned expensive pretty costumes, since that just makes the faces look even more washed out if you use drugstore brands, like you said. Thankfully, the last few times, we had a girl who brought in all her MAC e/s (Two traincases' worth - I had to pick her up every day because the cases were huge and heavy and she's a really small girl, LOL) so that we could use those to layer the cheaper stuff. That was incredibly nice of her, and of you, too! Kudos!
