Just wondering what other thought-to-be or proven ingredients that are in MAC products are carcinogenic (cancer causing) or toxic?

I know studies have been made on talc, which has shown that extreme exposures have caused cancer in animals, and talc has been found in lung and ovarian cancer cases. And I know that crystalline silica can cause cancer in the lungs, but I suspect MAC contains non-crystalline silica (which is harmless).

I am by no means an expert at chemicals, but I do remember from university days that the reason so many test animals got sick was because of the crazy amount of product they were exposed to. The aspartame rat study springs to mind. The rats were fed more aspartame than a human would consume in an entire lifetime. Plus the fact that the rats have a much smaller average mass than most humans meant that the concentration they were given was astronomical. I think that the same goes for carcinogens in cosmetics. Yeah, if I were exposed to hundreds of times my body weight in cosmetics in a short period of time, I would probably get cancer. The tests are for extreme conditions and unlikely to produce the same results in humans.

There are, but MAC has made an effort to keep the worst offenders out, for instance they recently replaced paraben preservatives with phenoxyethanol. As for talc, the problem with it is that it is often tainted with asbestos, and is carcinogenic only if you breathe it. So presumably talc in pressed product is pretty harmless. Oh, no. I'm not really that concerned. It's just somebody on another forum had said with complete confidence that MAC is overrated and carcinogenic, which I would like to challenge, because if it was TRULY carcinogenic then it would be taken off the market. MAC is a corporation, but not above it's customer's health.

I just wanted to know if his statements had any truth, and if I could hypothetically defend MAC's products in anyway. Thanks!! =D

^^A lot of people say that. Particularly those who just don't like Company A and need a reason to justify being a complete downer. Like said above, if you're exposed to talc that's been tainted, and exposed to a lot of it all at once, you'd probably get really really sick. But to be exposed to a little of it in a cosmetic product? Really unlikely.
Evidently everything causes cancer these days, so live it up. Every parking lot I walk through has that "This area contains a chemical known by the state of California to cause cancer." Well jeez, if you can get cancer from walking in a parking lot, I'm going to enjoy my powder blush and its talc, because we just can't be safe anymore lol not even from baby powder!

That's not entirely true.. the cosmetics industry is not regulated by any Federal organization. The EU places standards on the safety of cosmetic ingredients, but the US does not. MAC products do contain known carcinogens, but in minute amounts. The air we breathe and the food most of us ingest regularly is more harmful to our health than a wee bit of eyeshadow :P But in the interest of encouraging the use of safer cosmetic ingredients I try to seek out organic and BDIH certified cosmetics. Although I cannot seem to give up MAC! And anyone arguing that MAC is somehow worse than any other deparment store brand is just making stuff up.

You know I all ways wondered about this too, specifically with MAC.
I have heard that before about their products, that they use
bad ingredients. My sister works at Origins and she said she noticed
the girls who started working at MAC came with good skin,and then
it appeared as though their skin started to go downhill after repeatedly wearing the foundations,etc. She told me this and she is not brand competitive at all. She actually wants to switch to her MAC counter because they make more money. She said Origins has some bad products too. She just works there,you know.
I was at a hotel with those signs everywhere (chemicals known to cause cancer).....WTF? Weird...

Another thing is that yes I do think sometimes people say stuff to badmouth a line that they don't like. But I think there is some partial validity to it too...
But its not just MAC, its ALL makeup lines, unless they are the super all natural kinds.
They all pretty much contain the same stuff, so I don't see a difference between the danger of MAC to say Chanel, or to Maybelline,
or Ulta or whatever..

i've been scared to find out if MAC's ingredients are bad. i know they are right on the package but i love MAC too much and just want to play ignorant of the bad stuff, lol.
