that is true - however if you just concern yourself about the lead in lipstick you are missing a bigger picture.

many of the dyes used in makeup are also approved for use in food - with the same level of contaminant approved.

example: Red F&C No6 is approved for use in food and cosmetics. the allowable lead contamination is 20ppm in this dye. yes - you'll consume it if you use lipstick with this dye... but there will also be lead contaminant in any food that uses this dye as a food colouring.

the amount of contaminant in food will be smaller, but we also consume a lot more food than we do lipstick.

our intake of chemicals and contaminants is not limited to cosmetics, they are in practically every food we eat as well. the panic caused over contaminants in cosmetics sometimes ignores the fact that these same contaminants are added to our food.

4 lbs. of lipstick is a lot. Let me do some calculations...

4 lbs x 16 oz./lbs = 64 oz. So there are 64 ounces in 4 lbs.

64 oz./0.13 oz per lipstick=492 lipsticks

In 4 lbs, there are 492 lipsticks, excluding cases and other packaging. Most lipsticks contain 0.13 oz of lipstick per tube, but some contain less. I haven't seen lipstick with more than 0.14 oz.

I don't know how many of are able to fully use 492 lipsticks in our lifetime WITHOUT getting any lipstick on surfaces like mugs.

Therefore, we do not eat 4 lbs. of lipstick in our life.

What about lipgloss? Does that affect you and, cuz I'm pretty sure I've ingested a whole lotta lipgloss in my less than 2 decades life time

I've personally tried the whole test thing. I used Queen's Sins, Budding Lust as well as Cosmo. Cosmo didn't turn black at all, (i tested it on a piece of tissue) Budding Lust didn't change color too, and the only one with some black marks was Queen's Sin. So i guess red lippies tend to have lead in them. But i dont really wear red's that often though, so i guess those that usually wear more red lippies need to worry abit more?

the ring test that causes black marks has been proven to be false. it doesn't indicate lead in lipstick.

I was thinking this same thing... that's an awful lot of lipstick. But 492 tubes is the amount you'd supposedly consume... so if you figure you end up eating 25% - 50% (I mean, I have no idea how much you end up actually eating? LOL) of the lipstick you actually apply that's using between 984 and 1,968 ENTIRE tubes in your lifetime. I'm 26 years old and I've yet to use an entire tube of lipstick up LOL.

Honestly, to spend so much time worrying over such a miniscule amount of lead in a lippie, it's not worth it. AND - not to mention by the time you reach lippie wearing age (approx 13) you have breathed in enough carcinogens from the air around you to cause cancer. ;( To worry just about lead in lipstick is too small to deal. I'd worry more about what's in your food (particularly fast food) and air you breathe.

Couple of things here...
All red pigment has naturally occurring levels of lead.
If you are freaked out about lead in lipsticks, then you need to not wear deep pigmented pink or red lipstick. Full stop.
Lead is also found in red food colourings. You are doing yourself far more "harm" by eating red licorice than putting on red lipstick, but ultimately it's up to you.
I personally found this "study" to be irresponsible hype - after the lead-in-toys story (which was quite dangerous) - everyone was trying to jump on the bandwagon to get some press, this company included.
You had to do your own research to find out that really? that red velvet cake is far more dangerous than your Dior.
