How do you know when a batch was made (post Jan 2005)?
I want to get some of the pigments that were recently made eye safe (naked, teal, cornflower, silver fog)
When I go to the store, how will I know which ones were from batches made after 2005? The MAC MA's I've spoken w/ in the past don't usually take my concerns about eye safety too seriously, so I'd like to know and check myself. Thanks!

I think that on the bottom of the boxes it says the batch number. If the last number is a 5, you're set.

You will need to check the batch number, which is printed on the label on the bottom of the jar.

The first character represents which run the item was made, the second character represents the month, and the third character represents the year.

Thusly, B54 means the second run of May 2004.

I went to a pro store a few weeks ago and they had the pigments in boxes on display on the floor area where the customers can reach. Anyways I started lifting up the boxes to check the batch number. This SA marches up to me and asks me what I am doing (it's not like I was ruining the display they were all lined up and I was simply lifting the box to see the batch number and putting it back in its place). When I told her that I was checking the batch number to see if they were the new eye safe versions she gets really mad at me and says "You can't tell if a pigment is eye safe by the batch number!" Then she pointed me to the tester jars where they had these little red stickers that were supposed to represent the non-eye safe ones. They were all screwed up. Like violet had a red sticker yet none of the glitters did.

Soooo... I think I will stick to the pigments that I know are eye safe until MAC sorts themselves out.

Oh my god, that's such a typical story of a MA getting bitchy ...

I hate when they get pissy if you know anything. There is a girl that works at the counter where I live and if you even pretend you know the names of the things you want or the brushes or anything she treats you like crap the rest of the time. If you act ignorant she likes you. I think it is to their benefit if we want to check batch numbers...that way we won't have to return it which they really seem to hate!

I know, and I don't understand that. I guess it makes them look bad. It's not like I go there to quiz them on what they know I just want to buy my shit and leave. I'm usually very polite, act dumb and listen to them explain the products to me anyway. But since I don't get to a pro store very often I'm usually in a hurry to find all the things I want haha.

Product Code Breakdown
The first letter signifies the production run that month - A was the first run, B the second run and so forth.
The second letter or number signifies the month of production:
1 = January
2 = February
3 = March
4 = April
5 = May
6 = June
7 = July
8 = August
9 = September
A = October
B = November
C = December
The final number indicates the year of production.
From here.
