Make-up going bad..

I'm just curious.. i know a lot of magazines tell you to throw makeup out when it's old.. but i don't think anyone would want to throw out a mac eyeshadow or pigment untill it was used up. do any of you throw them out after a certain time or do they basically last a long time?

I'm religious about the mascara thing - liquid eyeliners, too... but for the rest of it I use Smell. Smell the product when it's new - the moment it deviates from that toss it. Everything else that's dry - I use the "consistency" test. Is it performing the same way? If not, time to go.
