blending

i'm sure there were some threads about blending on here, but i couldn't find them so here we go.

i'm absolutely impressed by everyone's blending skills on here, but how do you go about it? everytime i try to blend my shadows, the two colors end up being muddled into one color and that's not what i want. help?
