ive been reading thru the threads and wondering if anyone would know if australia takes on the same process you guys have for applying to become a mac mua..

like you have nordstroms and macys we have myer and david jones, would you apply thru the department stores, through a manager at your local mac counter or through the estee lauder group (that would be the sydney division for me)

I asked at one counter and the mua said id have no chance as i wasnt professionally trained (i.e have no industry certified credentials, ive only done a short course) then another mac mua commented on my make up application and told my friend i was talented and should def apply - contradicting stories and dont know which one i should believe..

the mua who told my friend wasnt even trained herself and that mac trained her through various workshops etc

i would really appreciate if anyone knows anything if they could enlighten me..

To work at a Myer or David Jones counter, you need to apply through Coles Myer Employment or David Jones HR. They have trained make-up artists (a diploma of make-up art, one year minimum) and counter staff (certificate in cosmetic retail). Make-up artists there are able to apply make-up, counter staff can only man the register and provide very basic customer assistance.

Staff at the Mebourne and Sydney pro stores all have diplomas, or the international equiv OR were trained by MAC overseas.

To apply for work at the pro store, you'll need a diploma and then contact the store manager, who will either handle your application themselves or refer you to the EL manager for that district.

oh well theres no point in applying. i was thinking of applying at a counter in myer, i already had an group interview with them about 4.5 months ago and once you have an interview you arent allowed to apply for another 6 months, although it wasnt for working at a make up counter. ive done a short course and have my own experience of applying on myself, family and friends but dont have the needed qualifications.

oh well looks like i can give up i guess... meh :/

Depending on the store I don't think you actually have to go through DJ's or Myers as the M.A.C counters in these department stores are usually concessions. The deal usually is, because it's a concession, that you don't have to be interviewed by the department store, just the counter manager or area/sales manager. I'm working at my M.A.C counter in Myer Perth and i was only interviewed by the counter manager, no Myer interviewing required. Give it another try, you have nothing to lose!

they usually list any specific qualifications they require as well.

you might have better luck handing in the resume to a counter or store manager though - because if they know you as a customer and can see your skills on your own face it might help swing that interview.

Ummm just so you know...Myer is no longer part of Coles, so you shouldn't apply through them. Also MAC operates as a 'concession' business inside Myer, and therefore Myer do not have any say in the recrutiment process of MAC staff. I am a former recruitment officer for Myer, and they were (at that point in time) the only cosmetics brand that operates in Myer this way. Most brands are a joint venture between the cosmetics house and the store.

Your best approach is to contact MAC directly and also make yourself known to the counter manger, so that they can recommend you.
