MAC - Wonder Woman Discussion

Though to be fair, $3 on the wholesale level for just product isn't ridiculously cheap (like, unsafe level of cheapness). If you'd said .50 cents, you would have scared me

lol liba.. the .50 cents and even less are for the less expensive lines -- not MAC, or any of the EL cos... but that does include the cost of advertising too.. lol.

Chanel's is like $ 4.50... so the markup is huge.

Wow I could do some serious damage if Everything was $3 :) I would just buy 1 of everything.

Im happy mac is on the lower price side of high end products...I could never afford to be addicted to chanel or nars....but I do lovee my nars

At least EL seems to keep their overall marketing budget at a reasonable level (unlike Chanel, which I feel constantly assaulted with - though it seems to work for 'em, lol).

The raw materials to make the gloop we slather all over our faces is probably pennies, but I don't mind paying more if those are costs associated with exacting quality control and R&D for the future.

I was never a sucker for fancy packaging - seriously who is going to use the tiny eyeshadow brush or thumbnail sized blush brush that other companies pack in - so that was something I liked about MAC, before they got bought out. I always figured that was a big help towards keeping their prices more within reason. The cost-cutting MAC does nowadays probably goes towards keeping other EL brands afloat (why I'm guessing the price points have been creeping up anyhow) - but at least they're trying to spruce up the Estee Lauder brand....it's getting less stodgy at last.

TDLR - these companies are not hurtin' for ca$h

liba, amen.. and exactamente.

these cos are not hurting for Cash, which is why they have been acquiring other companies who got skid marks on the asses when the recession began... and I do agree mama EL itself is sprucing up it's image and becoming less old ladyish..lol, look who's talking !!

The ingredients for cosmetics, as you say are not overly expensive -- but the cost of R&D and technology which must accompany it is exorbitant. Quality Control is one issue which is not on any budget for lower priced cosmetics.

A very important point to consider!

Personally, I want my cosmetics made under pharmaceutical grade, astronaut level conditions (one can dream). You hear so many stories about tainted batches of infant formula and aspirin nowadays - imagine the potential for problems with "mere" makeup. You couldn't get me to use no-name, knockoff cosmetics if you gave them to me for free.

Like I said I don't like the packaging and I really don't need any more eyeshadows or lipglasses.....

But maybe I can get a nice new powder or blush?

I was nervous to view the packaging and after finally viewing it....I'm thrilled with the packaging.

I was hoping they were going to use red as the background color and not use black or white. This is very classic Wonder Woman. I loved Liberty of London (white background) and Hello Kitty (black background) but I felt like MAC had to do something different and stay true to the American flag colors as in Wonder Woman's costume.

Now I just hope I like colors in the collection...lol!

I think the packaging looks really Wonder Woman classic. I'm sure if MAC bedazzled it so much that it didn't look WW themed anymore, there would be a lot of people complaining about it. So good job, MAC. [: Looks like we're getting the same quad style from Hello Kitty? I can't wait to see more pics!<3

Interesting topic! Personally, in my experience with the cosmetics industry, even when proper QC is built in, the margins are still astonishingly high. In many brands, that's done so that the company can support a large marketing budget (not just advertising, but promotions in-store; discounts, gifts with purchase, loyalty programs, etc.), but margin on cosmetic products of various sorts is still more than double those seen normally with hard goods and beyond the dreams of companies in areas like electronics.

I think that part of the appeal of doing promotions like VV or Wonder Woman is that Mac gets to "borrow" marketing funds from their partner, who have more to invest. Just my 2 Canadian cents.

Please keep saying that. I need you to convince me that I don't need anymore eyeshadows for now :) Thank you.

just so everyone knows dc comics did the packaging as i was told but my source could be wrong. they wanted it to stay true to the cartoon essence that is wonder woman both MAC and dc had to sign off on the packaging as do any other people MAC colaborates with when doing a collection

I was wondering if DC Comics had a say in the packaging b/c it looks very Wonder Woman to me. I grew up watching the show and also the cartoons so I was pleased how it turned out. Thanks for sharing the info!

I never watched or read Wonder Woman as a comic - that's why I don't like the whole concept I guess.
