MAC X Beth Ditto Discussion

People have been bashing MAC and their collections lately because most of them have been horrible. So many quads with no color payoff, so many products that just make you go WTF, so many of the same colors over and over and over. This year has been a little bit better, but there still have been bad collections...Beth Ditto was so horrible, Hey, Sailor was pretty bad too with the same boring colors we've seen a million times. I don't see what was supposedly so great about the Shop Cook and Reel Sexy lipsticks either, I skipped the Shop Cook ones and the 2 I got from Reel Sexy I hardly ever wear. So the mattes weren't drying...I don't see that as a huge accomplishment.

Or they're bashing MAC because they release too many fecking collections a year, or they consider MAC overpriced compared to the competition. (And yeah, bad products within said collections are very much a reason, too.) The way other companies handle collections is, IMO, much better (I'm thinking mainly of NARS and Illamasqua here -- NARS releasing one collection a season and making some items from each permanent, Illamasqua releasing a S/S collex + a F(A)/W one, with some mini-collections here and there, and making most (if not all) items permanent). I'd rather MAC release fewer collections, spend some time putting some actual thought into them, and focus more on their permanent items -- both the ones that currently exist as well as R&D into new ones.

Bingo. This is easily a case where quality should be rated higher than quantity. But poor quality or not, these collections always sell like hotcakes. And unless people start voting w/ their $$$ and stop buying LE collections, MAC will continue releasing 1,000,000 collections a year (with some items being waaaaaay better than others - recent examples being ED/TC over BD).

i understand your point of view. i dont buy everything from every single collection and yes mac is overpriced compared to the makeup at the drugstore, like wet n wild or nyc, but not chanel, nars, dior or even illamasqua.

kimibos - thanks for the shout out! It's fun for me to have somewhere to go on about makeup at, with so many nice folks. I know that if I had to rely only on swatches online, I probably would just not buy much of anything at all, so if any of my rants can help people out, great! LOL, lord knows if everyone didn't treat me as well as they do at my MAC store, I would probably buy a whole lot less too. My collection is starting to get kind of huge, d'oh.

In my personal experience, Nars is priced higher but it's always been been worth it. The product I received for the price I paid is always consistently good. That's not always the case w/ MAC and I think that has to do w/ them pumping out collection after collection (obviously this is in reference to MAC's LE items). I've taken breaks from MAC in the past after becoming disenchanted w/ the quality of the product produced. Obviously, i'm back to buying since quality has improved (for some items), but I'm a lot more picky about where my money goes.

Overall though, if I find the quality of product to be better, I'm willing to pay the extra $. If I don't have the cash, I save up until I get it (which is another advantage permanent collection items have over LE. There's no frenzy to buy things NOWNOWNOW).

BRINGING THE TOPIC BACK TO BETH DITTO - the counter near my parents' house still has Dear Diary, so I'm going to try it out and maybe buy it! It looks like I might be able to pull it off instead of waiting for CYY.

Im talking about this year. 3 quads have been released and the color payoff was really good compared to the ones from last year. if you have a big collection then you definetely find the colors to be the same but some people including myself dont have huge collections. i agreed with how bad beth ditto was but hey sailor wasn't bad, not liking the colors is one thing not liking the quality of the products is other. the quality was there. shop cook was an awesome collection quality products with colors that are on trend. different from the perm line or other brands. same with the ones from reel sexy, it all comes down to what you like and what colors you wear. i dont trash collection with nude lippies or dark eyeshadows just because i dont wear them.

I definitely have a huge collection...probably getting close to $5,000 now worth of MAC. But I didn't see great quality with Hey, Sailor either, it's just that the colors were the biggest problem. But the eyeliners were kinda bad, didn't have much payoff, the lipglasses were very thick and weird, some of the eyeshadows were sheer, etc. But I still didn't see anything great about Shop Cook, the eyeshadow quads were average at best...I probably would have bought every Tendertone they had in stock if I could have afforded to though. And with Reel Sexy, the eyeshadow duos were mostly sheer and chalky. Quality has went way way down since I first started buying MAC. I don't find their prices to be so bad...yet. Except for a few things like nail polishes, I've never seen worse quality nail polish and yet it's more expensive than most other brands. MAC mostly just wants to get these collections pushed out now because they care more about money than anything else...and so they don't really bother with the quality anymore.

i cant agree more, those damn nail polishes are $16 and the formula is getting worse. i cant justify the fact that they cost more than china glaze, orly or opi. i just cant. i may get some at the cco for $10 which is still bad but ill make a list of the one that were good per collection.

I got Dear Diary and YPA. I'm contemplating Booyah!!!. I want to see it in person as I've never bought a lippie like it. I have some oranges but there either more muted or a lipglass (Riviera Life). Anyone have Booyah!!! that can give their input on it? Btw, I freaking love the name Booyah!!!

In theory, I want to LOVE CYY, but it's way too bright. If I bought it, I'd probably just stare at it in the tube wistfully, wishing it wasn't so dang NEON haha.
I have both and yes I do prefer DD over CYY for sure. I wore DD today at work and it lasted pretty well. It dried down but didnt get all cruddy like matte lippies sometimes do on me.

I love T's swatches and respect her but to be honest I dont really listen to her reviews anymore. I'm sorry but I think the grading is stupid. Certain products work for different people. I go elsewhere when I need reviews. Of course the big one being here with my amazing speckies (like trekkies, get it? haha). And I'm glad not all MAC collections are winners. Then I'd REALLY be broke lol. I say if a collection is no good just ignore it and move on, cause there is always a better collection around the corner. And more suitable for your tastes and things you dont own in your stash. Sometimes they release something, see the feedback and at least attempt (not always successfully but you know what I mean lol) to improve it.
Haha, that's a REALLY good way to look at it!

I got Love Long distance. I really like. It kind of looks like my beloved pervette on me which i've been meaning to replace because I've been out of it for awhile. I also got Beth Mask which I tried for the first time this morning. I decided since I ordered it (before I saw all the reviews) I should at least try to use it. I finally gave up. After 10 minutest o trying to make it look presentable on my skin tone i gave up and put sweetheat and rich core over it. I learned if you want it for a base it work for sweet heat and rich core rather well. I'm a mom with 3 kids and a job. I just dont have time in the morning to mess with my makeup for a long time.

Pervette!!! That's the color I was trying to think of that it reminded me of! I LOVE that lippy! Its the first MAC lippy I ever finished. I forgot what the color was called, and the sticker on the bottom faded. Thanks so much now I can go get it again. I love the violet and pink duochrome it has! Does lld have that too?

No it doesn't have the duochrome but the color is very similiar without me looking at them side by side. Pervette was my first MAC lippy to finish too!
