Boys In Make-Up...opinions.

Alright. This is a truthful post.

MODS//ADMINS - feel free to delete if you feel it gets out of hand, or inappropiate.

But with that said...

I assume we are all civilized people here, and we know how to conduct a conversation politly.

I've been browing rating communites on livejournal. Though, in my opinion, I usually find them very disappointing as it proves how vain and shallow people are, as regard to their own low self-esteem, and thus need to boost it by putting others down.

Though I have to admit I have applied to some before, i guess every now and then its fun to see what others think. After all, in my high school, I was voted "Most Likely To Appear On A Runway".

But upon applying to a rating community recently, (shame on me
th_confused_new.gif
), Though I have gotten alot of "Yes's", No application ever goes with a "no". And the reason one of these girls gave is...

"Boys SHOULDN'T EVER wear makeup."

And I thought to myself. Yes, she is from the mid-west. It is more understandable. But still. I noticed a boy wearing makeup that applied to ANOTHER community, though he was accepted, a girl made the same remark. Upon which, there was 5+ comments saying the same thing.

Now I understand that these ARE rating communites and people are allowed to say what they want, and how they feel. Though in my opinion, i feel that remarks such as those are the result of seclusion from cosmopolatin areas, a strong belief in religion, or just a lack of culture.

Or perhaps someone who has just never shopped at a MAC counter/freestanding. Haha. After all, let's face it. Sometimes the male MA's are even better than some of the girls.

However, It is not only gay men who wear makeup, as straight men do to. I know a very straight bodybuilder who wears foundation, as does the star of our school's varsity soccer team. (Sssh! No one knows that but me!)

Men on runways, ads, movies, television shows, news reporters, they all wear makeup in one way or another.

Make-up is not always about the color. Make-up is a way to improve confidence. A man who looks clean and well kept is more likely to attract someone who is dirty and smells like cat pee. Well, unless youre into that thing.

So now tell me, what are your views on men in make-up? Are you for it? Against it?

Now as long as you voice your opinion in a respectful manner, im sure we can all agree. Don't be afraid to you are against it if the majority is for it. And vice versa.

BOYS IN MAKEUP ROCK. Yes, they do.

I love it, and I wish they would do it more. If girls can, why not boys? Besides, in France in the times of the Sun King (Louis XVI), the boys were not averse to dolling up, and for the life of me, I cannot see why this practice has been dumped.

I love it how you've been posting your looks, and don't you dare ever stop.

Ok, now going back to read your post properly...

I totally agree - if applying it will make you feel better about yourself, then heck, why not? Many of us pay such close attention to other aspects of our appearance so to me it only seems natural that males re-embrace their makeup roots! It's a method of self-expression just like dress is, in my opinion.

Other reasons why there is stigma attached to men in makeup is because, as a very good friend of mine told me, pirates wore eye makeup to look more threatening. Such practices may explain partially why there would be those who see men in makeup as being dubious in nature, or of 'deviant' sexuality etc. In 1800s, I once read how Irish men dressed in women's clothing - not as disguise - but to show that they were above the law - they were horseback criminals and roamed the land terrorising in all sorts of ways.

And in case you were wondering, the term 'deviant sexuality' is not my own, and I would NEVER label any sort of sexuality as deviant, unless it is not mutually consential. Just covering my a*** there.

Ok, Onederland, sorry, you probably weren't expecting an essay - I studied a bit about this sort of stuff, and anything reinforcing stereotypes sets me off! My personal pet peeve is that attractive and intelligent are apparently unable to coexist in the SAME female body. Please!

I love makeup and colour, and art, but I want to be mega-brainy too. Yes, they CAN exist together, I will make it my mission...

I also think that everyone should do as he pleases, and if that includes men wearing make-up that's totally fine!!

and it's just like you said - some men are even much better at applying make-up than girls, as your pics prove! they're so creative!!

here, in Austria, I haven't ever noticed a man wearing make-up except MAs, I don't know why. obviously it's not that common here, but maybe that's also because we just have 2 MAC counters in Vienna, and I could imagine a man feeling a little bit weird when browsing through Chanel or Estee Lauder make-up, which is plenty here ... just an idea ;-)

I'd definitely rather have a boyfriend using powder, concealer, mascara, etc than someone with dirty nails or whatever!

Dirty nails, ugh! One thing I can't stand on anyone!

Good point, Veilchen. In fact, I tell my semi-SO that because he's so into (and skilled) at painting roleplaying miniatures (you know, like Warhammer etc.), he would make a FANTASTIC makeup artist. I always ask him to critique my experimental looks, because his eye for that sort of thing is very good.

I love boys in makeup. If you have the confidence to wear it in this f'd up judgemental society, go for it! Did anyone see on Sephora that Jean Paul Gaultier came out with a "tinted brow and lash groomer" (read: MASCARA!) for men?? I love it!

I think the same thing..if girls can wear it..why not boys! I guess throughout history it has been a sterotype that only women wear makeup..but C'MON this is the year 2005! IMHO, I think guys who do wear makeup and take care of themselves is very hot..striaght or gay either way its hot! lol..also if you think about it girls, if guys wore makeup we would prob. have so much more in common with them!

I mean come on everyone is old enough to do what they want! And its not of my business if he or she feels to ware makeup or not!
I think that men are the best hair dressers out there and male MA does not bother me at all as long as they know what I'm looking for (does that sound too superficial?)...

Onderland, I think you should do what you feel YOU want to do. Regardless of what we all say, we are not in your shoes and cannot tell you what to do, although some will try - what you feel most comfortable in is whats ok.

Personally, I have no problem with men wearing makeup. I have to say I learned that makeup was used to enhance beauty, or to help conceal problem areas, and I know tons of guys that wear it for that reason.
Makeup has evolved and so have the people wearing it. Shit I was almost 30 before I even started wearing eyeshadow.

Be who you are, fabulous or not, makeup or not, just be you...anyone that doesnt like it, or doesnt understand it...well screw em. Now I dont care.

Just a side note - I walked into the MAC freestanding store, and the guy that helped us was uber-gay, and he was very cool, except he had on about 50lbs of blush and his foundation was way off color...that was tacky IMHO but not offensive..

Just to point out a few things here.. Once upon a time being Gay was so taboo that there wasnt even a forum for discussion about it. It was just something you didnt talk about. I grew up in a Very "tolerant of all" household. Jokes were not to be made, people were equal regardless of race, color, creed, sexual preference etc.
I try to teach my daughter that as well. We are all different and beautiful in some sort or fashion regardless of who we love and/or are intimate with.

My daughter is 7 and has been exposed to both gay men and lesbians since age 3 or so..Her take on it is this "As long as you love them it doesnt matter who you kiss". I think that pretty much says it all right there. And just fyi, she thinks you're sooo cool cause your makeup is incredible. She sees nothing wrong with it, and neither do I.

Another sidenote. Where do people get off acting like that? Do they know nothing of Shakespeare? Where women werent even allowed to be in his original works? It was men who dressed as women...Makeup, wigs and all! There was no question of right or wrong - it was as it was. Every play consisted of men in womens roles...No difference from any man that goes on stage now either...

i am ALLLLLL FOR boys wearing makeup! i mean REALLY is this 2005 or not? it doesn't matter if they're metrosexual or homosexual there's not a DAMNED thing wrong with it.. in my opinion it's the shallow small minded people who take issue with it... it is a presonal decision and no one has the right to judge what someone else does with their own face.. i mean look at the boys here... littlemakupboy, onederland and scarcity... could they BE any cuter and AMAZING with their makeup skills??? i say more power to boys in makup!!!!

I do think make-up looks good on SOME men. I think you look (onederland)great with make-up on, and I like the other boys's creations a lot too! I also don't believe that anyone should judge men who like to wear make-up, if it makes them feel happier and more confident, why not? one thing I do is htat my first reaction to mu on boys is 'they must be gay'. Kinda weird, but I'm glad you just showed me that I shouldn't be judging people on that.

But know I would freak out if I saw my dad wear make-up, and I would be kinda upset if I saw my boyfriend apply foundation on himself.. Sorry I just don't find it a turn on, I like it that my man is scared of make-up, because it might harm his manhood (He HATES the MACstore, because there are too much colorfull men, who are not afraid to show off their homosexuality). I had to force him into wearing lipbalm when he had sore ,dry and broken lips. I was the one who put some cream on his face. And I adore him even more when he comes w/ me to MAC, and I see him thinking 'what the hell am I doing here', and runs to the shop with X-boxgames as soon as we leave the place, to make sure he's boy-ish enough!

I saw some girls write about men w/ dirty nails are gross, and I agree on that one. But hygiene is something that's a must for everybody, I like everyones face and nails clean, and I don't want to smell a body odour on anyone, male or female!

I do find the male MUA are mostly better than the female, maybe that's because the girls don't want to be jealous at the girls they did the MU on.

ITA with all of the above!!!

Although, I don't think that male MA's are *always* better than the females. I think that there just aren't as many male MA's, so when there is a good one, he shines. Talent does not have anything to do with gender.

Hey now...I'm a female hairdresser, and I've been told many, many times that I KICK ASS!!!! I've even "rescued" some hair that was butchered by a male hairdresser. As I said before, talent does not have anything to do with gender.

I agree! I am completely fine with men wearing makeup (my favorite ma is a man), but I wouldn't want my bf wearing it.

My (ex-kinda) boyfriend doesnt wear makeup, and like Sanne's he hates going to mac with me...He also hates sephora, but at my persistance he uses moisturizer, and takes care of his face and hair...He doesnt wear makeup persay but he uses my products...Loves mac moisture feed skin.

I wouldnt be grossed out if he wore makeup, but I guess it depends on what he wore.

I dont think men should be intimidated by gay men, but sometimes they are unless they get to know them on a deeper level, and realize not every gay man wants to 'do' them. He got to know my dads friend, who's a hairdresser and VERY flamboient...Hes awesome, and we all love him to death.

same with my hubby... my DH doesn't wear makeup but I showed himow different taking care of his skin will make it look and feel. he now uses cliniques men's line: facial cleanser, moisturizer and for pesky pimples origins spot remover. i'm proud of him. i ONCE got him to try a tinted moisturizer but he even tho he liked the way it evend out his complexion, he felt it was too makeuppy ( is that a word??
icon_eek.gif
) anyway, he has nothing against boys wearing makeup either! i've showed him pics of the specktra boys and he thinks it;s pretty cool!

I totally agree with you, most of the MAC counters I've been to, are filled with guys, and just 1 or 2 ggirl MA's.
and yes, MU is all about feeling better and looking prettier, but i do believe there is a limit. for example my boyfriend wears pressed powder and sometimes a mattifier, and that's fine w/me, but I wouldn't go out with him if he were all glammed up with lots of colors, eyeshadow, glitter, lipgloss, etc. DON'T get me wrong, it's not that it wouldn't look good, because some guys who do it look great, but that's more like a dragqueen-ish look, and it certainly fits mostly gay guys. and I do have gay friends who do their MU fabulously!!!
so overall, I'm fine with guys wearing MU the way it fits them =)

I have no problem with boys wearing makeup, the only thing that *at the very, very least* irks me is when they have more make up than I do! It's not a bad thing at all, I just feel a little bare in comparison, lol. I loveee Male mac employees the best though...The one at my nearby counter.... wow....
