My friend had a similar problem (on a smaller scale).
Her 'best friend' and 'godsister' smashed her camera when she borrowed it on a trip. Both were 16 at the time and had little money. My friend had to hide the fact to her parents that she'd lent the camera to someone and paid almost more than the cost of the camera to repair the smashed screen. Her 'friend' made absolutely no effort to help with this cost and simply said 'i have no money. i can't help you fix the camera' leaving my friend to steal money from her own parents so that she could pay to get it fixed.

I was outraged. To me, that's not friendship. Hell, that's not even acquaintance behaviour. You borrow something that belongs to someone and damage it? You pay for it. simple as that.
Sadly those girls are still friends and my friend still considers her a 'best friend'.

I wouldn't consider your roommate a friend. Sadly money brings out the true personality of some people and it's not pretty.

I'd end it and if you really feel like you are justified the funds take her to small claims court. Sorry this happened to you.

Listen, I've ha issue with friends over money and this just shows that this person is not a real friend. I'm sorry to break to you but loyalty and honesty are key when you have a best friend. You can't trust someone who faults a either. If you don't feel like breaking it for good. Take a distance. Move away. Take a distance from her. She is not good in your life. If it was me I would end this friendship, fast. It doesn't matter how close you both have become, once it involves money, it's no longer a good friendship. Some friendship out there may stay strong through a money problem but rarely. I have this 'best friend' since high school, I used to lend her lunch money that she pays if she feels like it, back then I thought it's just a few dollars to get a pie it's nothing, I like to buy my friends stuff once in awhile. Okay so we finished high school and during our uni years she would ask for money for a jacket when we were at the mall cause she forgot her wallet or she hasn't got paid from work) she always promised she will pay back once she gets money but it never happens. She would ask to borrow clothing etc from me but never return as well, she would act whatever is mine is her too. Anyways, my parents taught me that there's no such thing as best friend forever in this world, friends comes and goes, even if you guys become so close like sister, says bestfriends forever, once you guys come across money problem, this friendship is never going to last. I finally ditched this friend of mine earlier this year, after 10 years of friendship, I finally ditched her! I felt released! So let's not make this all about me ~ sorry, I didn't even realized. Your best friend / room mate is not good for you, the longer you keep her around, the more you'll get frustrated everytime you see your car!

If you really do want to stay friends with this girl then maybe you can approach her one more time. Tell her you're sorry for the miscommunication but that you gave her plenty of time to fix the car. Tell her you understand if she doesn't have all the money to pay you back at once but that she needs to at least make a payment plan (say $100 a month). Write out a contract and then both of you can sign it. My friend and i did that and most of the tension was gone.

If you are going to drop her then I suggest you tell her that you're going to take her to small claims court or something. Goodluck!
