a question about monetary gifts..

my car's transmission has been acting up really bad lately, so we finally took it in to get it looked at and they told us it needed to be rebuilt and some of the parts (the most expensive ones, go figure) needed to be completely replaced...so they have my car right now and come Monday when we pick it up, we owe Aamco $2,100.

and one of my cat's fangs fell out (which i know, is an age thing, but) so i'm really worried about the hole it left getting an infection, so i'm taking him to the vet on Monday to get everything looked at and get some preventitive meds for him, which is gonna cost a bundle, i'm sure.

my grandparents are visiting, and my grandpa was the one who insisted we take my car to Aamco. he and my grandma like helping us out by picking up big tabs like that, for some reason. so my grandparents gave my mom $3,000 ($2,100 for the car and then the rest can be spent on the cat, i doubt he'll need THAT much, but they wanted to make sure there's PLENTY of money to get him all fixed up. about 6 years ago, the vet told us we could pay a whole bunch of cash to get something fixed or we could put him to sleep and i about died so my grandma is always more than willing to give us plenty for him)

they gave us this money as a gift, they always do. they never expect us to pay them back (they both have HUGE retirments and my grandpa has been VERY wise with his stocks haha) but i feel like since i'm an adult now, and i have SOME money, and all this money they just gave us is for MY car and MY cat, i should pay them back...but i don't know if they would be offended, since the money was a gift.

so i don't know what i should do. would you be offended if someone paid you back money that you gave them as a gift to help them out?

Yes I would be. I think you should buy them something thoughtful so that they aren't offended, but are in turn delighted

yes. because they are trying to help you out of their heart and if you try to pay them back, they might get offended or wrong idea. If you did pay them back, they either gonna think it wasn't enough (like u were offended by the amount) or they will feel wierd about helping out in the future. I am sure they did in kindness of their heart and I think by paying them back is being rude.

Like what above poster mentioned, get them something nice and thoughtful.

(i would get them MAC- perhaps stuff from uncoming releases? hehehe if the grandma doesn't like it, it will come back to you! hahaha jk)

since your grandparents seem to love you alot maybe you could pay them back by spending time with them im sure that means alot more then money to them like maybe you could go to the spa with your grandma for the day and just do some fun stuff with your grandpa another day. Both them and you will remember that alot more then just money.

I don't know how old your grandparents are, or their interests, but if you have money to buy them a nice thank-you gift (I take it that they picked up the bill as a gift, not so much as you needed them to step in) like a day at a local spa/resort. Your grandma could have a day at the spa and your grandpa could go golfing and get a massage...something like that you could probably book for under $300. Just a suggestion - feel free to disregard alltogether:p

well, my grandparents are staying with me and my mom for another two weeks, so we have plenty of time to take them out and do things, so i think we'll go with that

i don't think your grans would be offended but i think they love you and realise you are still young and living life (you may be an adult to the world but your grans will never see you that way hahaha) they see they are able to help you out once in awhile and are prob happy to do it since you don't take their help for granted...

if i were you i would take the money thank them a bazzilion times over and put it away in case something comes up...you'd know that you have some spare change

Instead of paying them back, why don't you send them on a cruise or a nice vacation and tell them you appreciate all that they have done for you.

I agree with most of these people . My grandparents are the same way..you can repay them by spending time with them and just being the awesome granddaughter that they know and love.

I pretty much agree with the general sentiment that spending time with them is probably all the "payback" they would care to receive. They just want you to be happy.

Take them out for dinner at your favorite restaurant
