Argh! Txtspk is driving me mad!

Why is it that very few people seem to be able to write English these days? Everything is in mobile phone shorthand textspeak language. It just seems plain lazy and ignorant to me. I can see the point on a 'phone where you sometimes have to type the message a character at a time and where a limited number of characters is allowed, but when you have a perfectly good keyboard to type on in front of you, it's just wrong. Especially in business documents and e-mails!

Even on this forum the use of, for example, u instead of you seems to be on the increase. And it only saves having to type 2 letters! What is the point? I'm even finding that I am less likely to reply to someone now if they only ever use txtspk because if they can't be bothered to write their question or comment out properly, why should I be bothered to answer it?

Well, the reason I sometimes shorten my text is because i get so used to typing the lazy way for chatrooms, im's, myspace, and stuff like that. It's a habit. Also sometimes my mind goes faster than my hands can type so I end up (inadvertantly) shortening stuff. But there is no way that I would ever turn a paper into a teacher that had that lingo in it!! Theres a time and place for everything. I'm fine with someone shortening with to w/ or because to b/c and Lol (laugh out loud). But anymore than that and I'm clueless. Lol! If you don't feel like you can understand the person, just don't reply- it's what I do!!

Sometimes txtspeak saves money in like SMS: TTYL is much shorter than Talk to you later and it might fit into one SMS! (I know it's a crappy example!)

I could give some more examples but I'm too tired so I hope you get the clue!

Yes, but I said that I understand the usefulness when it comes to mobile 'phones, I'm just mildly boggled by the way it's now becoming so common on message boards, forums, and (as I said) even in business letters and e-mails! There's really no place for it in business correspondence or any sort of document (including essays etc. at school/university), IMO.

I know how you feel, especially about using shorthand that only cuts out a letter or two (or shit like "baybie"). I've realized that most people aren't as fastidious as I am about grammar and spelling, though. I don't mind if people use a little shorthand online, but I hate having to take time to interpret text.

I definitely agree about using it in more formal settings and documents. Just no.
