Aromatherapy: Psychological or the real deal?

What are your thought on aromatherapy? Do you believe that certain scents do provoke/help different moods or do you think it's all in your head?

I've been a part timer at Bath and Body Works for over 5 years now and over the years have LOVED quite a few of the Aromatherapy scents. Naturally, most of the ones I liked were always d/c'd, but it wasn't until about a year ago that I thought maybe the Sleep/Stress ones had some benefits. I mostly got them for the way they smelled and I still won't buy one unless I like the scent, no matter what it's meant to help or promote. I'm not a big fan of lavender which is supposed to help with sleep, but the Lavender Chamomile is one of those scents that I might not like straightaway but after it sits on my skin a few minutes, I love it. I also recently got the Lemongrass Cardamom and I love how it smells too. I've noticed that since I started using both, I do seem to sleep better but again, it could be all in my head. I did start taking Synthroid recently for a thyroid problem so it could just be that now my thyroid is more regulated, it's helping me sleep better. For the energizing scents, I don't particularly feel like they help "energize" me but I do like how bright and sunny they smell, like the Bergamot Coriander which is d/c'd but can still be found during the clearance sale.

I'd love to know what other people think about it or if there's an aromatherapist out there, I'd like to hear what they have to say. I've always been curious about this and I do read from time to time how some people try certain scents and don't feel like they do anything or how some people think it's just psychological. Sort of the "if you believe it does so and so then it will" and that line of thought. Regardless, you can't beat some of the awesome scents out there!

I think a part of it is psychological, since scent is the strongest sense linked to memory.

However, I'm also a pet groomer and I use Aromatherapy with dogs (not so good for cats). I will use essential oils in their bath or mixed with shampoos/balms/etc. and I do notice a difference. Mostly its a Lavender mix to calm nervous or hyperactive dogs. The key is using the real deal essential oils, not the synthetic ones.

^agree, real essential oils do have an affect on the body, whereas synthetic ones don't. They may not benefit everyone, but I think they're helpfulto many people. I have alot of information on what different scents do, if anyoens interested.

I think that is a mix inbetween. Scents can have an immense effect on the body and scents that you know effect your mood are ones that you seek out. xsnowwhite, could you post some of that information? I would love to read it!

personally i think it is more psychological. if i went out and bought something to help me sleep like lavender oil, i think that i would automatically sleep well that night. but that is just my opinion. i have not actuall used aromatheraphy before, but i am interested in it and what others say on the matter.

I've only used something that was suppose to health promote sleep, and I swore I stayed up longer when I used it because in my mind I could only think "why isn't this working? I'm still awake..."

I dunno, I think it's mostly psychological... just like plenty of other things out there.

I'm sure there are plenty of sites on the internet that sell essential oils and I would think maybe even certain spas might sell some of the blends they use. Lavender is supposed to be really good for helping sleep and I would think that at least would be easy enough to find. Maybe even a health food store would have certain things. If you have a Bath and Body Works around, they sell a pillow mist that you can spray on your sheets and pillow so you might want to look there. Or Ebay even. HTH!!
