Good morning from the East Coast! My name is Vanessa, I'm 26, I live in Connecticut, and I just joined Spectra after hearing about it for ages. I am a member of mac_cosmetics on Live Journal and am considering a shift from what I do now (white collar job in the investment industry) to what I truly have a passion for: makeup artistry. I know it's quite a stretch, but I've taken several courses and I have a natural ability to blend well(!), but my goal right now is to expand my portfolio while keeping my "day job". I have theatre makeup and portrait experience. My dream would be to do makeup for runway (John Galliano!) and print.
My biggest challenge is moving away from my own face and its proportions and understanding the faces and bodies of others. I believe the physiology of the body (bone structure, muscles) must be understood, appreciated and utilized in order to expound and enhance the natural beauty of your subject.
My inspirations come from print, runway and nature, though my raison d'etre, so to speak, came from discovering the work of Kevyn Aucoin. This paradigm shift wasn't a majestic realization with choruses of angels resounding his name in heaven, but it came in the form of a "coffee table book" birthday gift from a friend: Making Faces. His natural ability and creativity were truly an inspiration.
Some other interesting things about me: I play the bassoon and play performance tours globally every couple of years; this year I am going to South Africa. I have been to China, Italy, and Eastern Europe this way, and it's a lot of fun! I speak conversational Italian and I lived in Tuscany and the Veneto. I love interior design and my boyfriend and I just completed the design of our urban-style loft apartment located in a renovated historically registered textile mill (it manufactured union soldier uniforms during the Civil War!).
I'm excited to join this community and I look forward to getting to know all of you.
