OK I'm getting sick and tired of the school systems in America (Ohhhh I will rip them to shreds!) BUT that's not the topic
smiles.gif

We have a lady here in GA who wants to ban Harry Potter. She's lost twice but she's going in for an appeal. She says something about it promoting witch craft.

OK - it's her beliefs that's fine.

BUT here's my beef with it- WHY in the world would you want to ban something that does 2 essential things for every kid?
1) It promotes literacy. The kids WANT to read Harry Potter. And that means they will read.
2) It promotes the use of the imagination. SO MANY KIDS these days do not have an imagination. none.

When I worked for the local county around here you would be surprised at how these kids have no imagination. It was so sad
ssad.gif

It's like we as a society are depriving our children to be...kids.

AND also with my rants (going along for depriving our children of being kids)

Is that fact that Christmas (whether-did i spell that right?- you celebrate it or not) that it's a magical time of the year for kids. They like to pretend and stuff (if they have an imagination) and so sometimes adults will play off on that wearing goofy hats etc. Here in GA we had a guy who was driving a school bus wear a santa hat for Christmas. It's a STUPID PEICE OF FABRIC PEOPLE and he happens to have a full white beard. (Not fake it's real) and he's been doing this for 5 frickin years and someone complained about it - that their child doesn't believe in Santa Clause and is offended!

OK STOP-first of all-how do you know that the child believes? School board ordered him to remove his hat but LUCKILY The parental outcry to demand the hat be put back on was heard!

YAY FOR THE PEOPLE who over ruled the crazy people! (and yes they ARE CRAZY)

Any news on the local crazies in your neighborhood? (Yes I do realize I will go to hell for this rant and be drug through the mud for calling these people crazies)

How does that offend her kid?! I doubt the kid went to his parents and said he was offending by it haha. I never believed in Santa but I would rock a Santa hat when I was little lol.

The first thing, bout Harry Potter sounds like something my psycho aunt would do. Crazy people are just plain crazy ...

People are freakin nuts! I call them the nutcases LOL

I gotta admit, i love Santa hats! They are so much fun!

Oh yes, Harry Potter- now have you heard about Spongebob?

It's now a show with questions about Spongebobs sexuality because he has a high squeeky voice! That's almost as dumb as calling the purple tellatubby Gay.

I'm just glad someone else here understand

You are so right- crazy people are just plain crazy. There is no chance I will ever be able to figure them out- but at least they are fascinating. They never fail to amaze me.

My argument is that sponges are asexual, so Spongebob cannot be either male or female and not gay

Kids lack imagination because they have so much virtual stuff handed to them. I liked video games, movies, television as much as the next kid, but I also liked reading, drawing, and other things that required me to create a world in my heead

I don't understand how Harry Potter promotes witchcraft; it's a fantasy piece of work. I don't know what kids are like nowadays, but if HP promotes witchcraft, I hope kids never read anything by VC Andrews

At least they didn't make him shave his beard. (That was sarcasm, btw

Amen. With all the distractions from xboxs, and wiis (is that how you spell it?), the internet, digital cable with 600 channels and ipods, getting kids to read these days is pretty amazing.

The second I read that about Spongebob, I thought about the whole Tellatuby "scandal". You know what the real issue is? Adults making an issue out of nothing. Kids will never disect and analyze these charecters the way adults do. Kids see the fantasy and magic. Adults look for hidden agendas. Adults project all of their baggage on these things. Kids just don't have the baggage that adults do. Seriously, the most important thing on a 5 year old's mind is playing soccer or getting a puppy.

I am waiting to overhear this in a crowd one day, "Ohhh, did you hear??? Spongebob is dating Lance Bass!!!! Really?? I heard he made a sex tape with Paris Hilton!!!"

these two statements struck me the strongest
this is entirely true and it brings me to tears thinking of it
i always fear for our future, how can we ever move on and invent/discover/try new things if there is no imagination that is wondering about what else there is to see?

america is becoming so uneducated as well. we need our youth to read as much as possible. banning harry potter is only saying they shouldn't read things that will help them grow linguistically

i'm so sorry that where you live people are unreasonable, and i am so sorry to all of us that america is restricting our sense of wonder and our will to learn

Agreed. I am impressed with the balance that JK Rowling uses in her choice of language. The child and adult charecters in her books speak intelligently and don't use words that "dumb it down" for the kids, yet they still manage to sound like kids. The humour, slang and sarcasm is still there, but it is just a part of dialogue.

So many other movies/TV shows made for kids rely on slang and poor language. That just makes its use appear acceptable and common place. It is just not something that kids need to be bombarded with during their formative years, IMO. They will grow up speaking like cavemen (no offense to those sensitive Geico cavemen intended

- You know, since we are being all PC).

I bet that woman would go apeshit if I sued the school district to have The Chronicles of Narnia removed because I don't want my kids learning about Christianity. If she's so concerned about it, she needs to make sure the librarians understand that her children are not allowed to check out or read certain books. She grossly underestimates the ability of children to be sneaky if she thinks that her kids follow her every rule about what to read, though.

Banning books is SO anti-everything this country stands for. A great novel on the subject is Fahrenheit 451.

I'm actually in the process of having Fahrenheit 451 banned from all bookstores/libraries/schools, I think that book is very un PC.

You're probably right. The Chronicles of Narnia popped into my head when I read that first post, too.

Seriously, can't that woman see all of the positive lessons kids learn from the Harry Potter books? And, uh...yeah...the fact that I obviously uh....know so much about the uh..... books kind of gives away the fact that I am a 35 year old Harry Potter fan.

LOL..

I'm a 25 year old Harry Potter fan if that makes you feel any better! And my Aunt turned me onto the books (she has all first editions, signed when possible) and she's 50 =P

Tinky Winky (yes thats the teletubby's name) is always referred to him, he, etc... and yet the producer makes him purple and carry a red handbag? im not saying that Tinky Winky's gay but it sounds odd to me lol

there's alot of crazy people here in the UK, it is now not PC to say Baa Baa BLACK Sheep because it's deemed Racist, its now Baa Baa RAINBOW Sheep and same goes for Black Coffee, it has to be now White Coffee without milk BUT is that not racist too? to say White? shouldnt it be like coffee without milk? has the world gotten to a point of where mentioning Black is racist? but not for the whites?

I believe that people get too OTT for this and not allowing children to sing Baa Baa Black Sheep is absolutely dumb thing to do, they're only children for a while, let them sing that rhyme, didnt bother anyone when it was invented, why now should it have to be changed? Children can learn about Political Correctness when they're older, in high school, but FFS let them do what they like with imagination, if they wanna be interested in Harry Potter or Father Christmas, let them be.

Pah silly crazy people. Errrm, i do English language A Level in college and im studying Political Correctness lol

I'm 16 now and I'm forever reading, i was a reader when i learnt how to read at 5, i love reading books and i hated Harry Potter but i love it now, and before college broke up, a lad only 13 asked me "Why are you reading a b..b..book? It's boring, dont you wanna play on PSP or on Computers? they're more fun" I couldnt believe it when he said that to me, and you're right, kids are lacking imagination, i'm always messing with gadgets, on computers, watching tv etc... but i always make time to read because it makes me learn new and different words each time

Wouldn't that be prejudiced against gay people, since the rainbow colored stuff stands for them?

Maybe I'm dumb, but I don't see how it's racist and can usually connect the dots fo even the weakest arguments. Wikipedia, which notes so much, doesn't mention the song being racist in its roots. I do like one man's resolution with this, which is sing it once with black and once with white.
