Which store/counter is the best to find a holiday, part-time job? Pays well, flexible, good discounts, etc. Thanks!

i don't know how flexible they are, since they probably want to schedule the crap out of you, but macy's would be fun during holiday...and of course you get the discount and all...as well as some cosmetic experince

The fragrance counter at any department store will be OFF THA HOOK during Christmas! You'll make so much money there, just make sure you're not hired as a "ringer" because that's unfair. After doing an amazing job during holiday, express interest to your manager that you'd like to start in cosmetics. Working for an Estee Lauder line that that does "gift" would be a great place to start out and make some money.

Dumb question, but should I just ask to speak with the manager or what? I haven't seen any ads out about jobs yet.

I work for Estee Lauder and as far as I am aware we don't hire seasonally. Also, during Christmas we don't have gift either so no huge $$ to be made off that - we do have the Christmas blockbuster but you don't earn any commission from selling those or purchase with purchase promotions, other than the qualifying purchase. Fragrances would probably be a better place to start as they are not run (atleast in my Macy's) by any one particular vendor, the department store itself chooses hires for that. It's unlikely at some places that people with no experience might get hired at some cosmetics counters, depending on the requirements of that vendor.

Well maybe it's different in different regions but I know that in L.A. at least fragrance is actually one of the most desired positions and one of the hardest to get.

Fragrance sells the most of any cosmetics area in most stores (especially during the holidays) and no one ever quits cos the commission is so good. Even when you have experience, it's hard to get into.

You might just go upto HR department and inquire what's available in the department. Some stores are weird and only "hire from the inside" so you have to prove yourself in some other department before you can be promoted to cosmetics.

Otherwise I would say it is generally easier to get into a small line like Philosophy, Keihl's, or possibly Benefit with less experience. Gift lines (Lauder, Clinique, Lancome) sometimes hire with little or no cosmetic experience.

Busy artist lines (MAC, Bobby Brown, NARS, Smashbox) are harder to get into and generally given to people already working in the department and wanting to move.

They aren't too flexible either because they have "black-out period" from Nov-JAn where you cannot request any days off.

Holiday is the best time to get into MAC-if that's the direction you're looking to go. They need Freelancers like crazy this time of year (I was getting almost 40 hours a week all through December last year as FL) and hire just about anyone that doesn't suck....at my first location anyways...I was hired on the spot & only had 2 weeks retail experience prior to that. Only problem is...no discount (unless you apply for the Pro card) and no gratis.

If it's not MAC you're looking for, I'd probably say any place in Macy's is the best way to go-discount on cosmetics and on clothes & junk.

OMG that is exactly what I needed to hear! I want a job at the MAC store near my house; Should I apply in late November?

I know that our Macy's doesn't carry alot of upscale products which are carried by Macy's Herald Square NY and whatnot and in my experience this does apply to cosmetics/fragrances somewhat as well. While my store carries ReNutriv products, we do not carry the Ultimate Lifting ReNutriv products which run for $200-600, although this varies from counter to counter. We also don't carry any of the Parfums which are $100+. This probably explains something of a discrepancy of the highest commissioned departments from store to store.

Also demand can vary greatly as well I think.

If I were in your shoes, I'd apply as seasonal and permanent. If you get the job as a seasonal, they may offer a full-time position to you. If they don't, you'll at least have had the experience to put on your resume for when they do hire full-time.

My counter is hiring 3 seasonal positions, and keeping 1 on permanently. ITA with Beauty Mark, but you've got to get in there now.

I've already had my interview, and was told to expect a call by early next week at the latest. They're hiring, don't wait!

MAC isn't necessarily easy to get into during the holidays though (keep in mind, alot of this stuff is a regional thing, and my counter is one of the busiest in north America, so it might be different than others) because alot of people want their makeup done for holiday parties and family get togethers so MAC looks more for experienced people during this time.

sooo, i'd say get into a smaller, less busy line like Lisa said. check out Benefit, Philosophy and maybe even Origins if you have one.

fragrance counters are definately harder to get into during the holidays because they make a bundle of $$$ comission. people will drop $75 on a bottle of perfume for their mom, but only about $20 on makeup for their girlfriend, so naturally, the fragrance counter workers make a hell of alot more than the cosmetics workers during the holidays.

if you have Nordstrom, i'd check there. even if they won't give you a counter job, Nordies does like to "hire from the inside" so after a few months, you can transfer to cosmetics and later to the MAC counter and you'll have a FAR better chance getting the job than someone who's never worked for Nordies

Yeah....I wouln't wait either. After Holiday, MAC's hours drop down to almost nothing...at least with Seasonal, your foot is in the door....otherwise, the only way you'll get in is if there is an opening that's not already being filled by an existing freelancer/someone in the company.
...Unless you know of any place where they are shaking things up....my store just did that. 4 or 5 people left (got promoted) to work in the city & 2 or 3 left the company all together.

Shyt, are you guys serious? Already?? I was planning to wait until February to apply with MAC. I definatley need a full time position though, not a "seasonal and then maybe you'll be full time" position; I can't afford to get laid off right after the holidays.

I'm not even sure whether I should apply for the MAC counter at Fashion Valley Nordstrom, (has evil managers), or the MAC Store Fashion Valley!!! GAH!

I think I'll just play it safe and wait until the holidays are all over. Maybe my mind will be a little bit more clear then.

Could you try doing a part-time seasonal and see if you can turn it into full-time permanent? I assume you have another job.
