Black eyeliner 'too much' for lighter skintones?

I have always worn brownish black or dark brown eyeliner b/c when I apply black it looks too harsh and dark on me, yet I think it looks really gorgeous on other people with lighter skin. Anyone else unable to pull off black, or do you think it's just something in my head and that anyone can wear it?

i think black eyeliner can be too much for any skintone if its applied like racoon eyes. it can also be flattering if applied tastefully.

Nah, it's not 'too much' I like lots of smouldering black eyeliner on any skintones...as you can tell from my pic

If you're not sure use a black on the inner rim and blend some dark brown on the lashlines.

I have light blonde hair, about NW15, freckled with pale blue eyes and I think I can wear it..... it might depend on the other makeup you have on.

What EXACTLY do you not like about the way it looks?

I wear black eyeliner all the time and love it, but application is everything.

Do you have pictures?

I am next to ghostly. I have naturally dark brown hair and I have warn LOTS of black eyeliner since 7th/8th grade. Its your personal preference, but it can be done. Just make sure the focus is on your eyes (because if you add a bunch of blush or lip stick to that, you are going to look liked a weird clown.) I learned that already.

I'll post a picture if you want. My small picture kind of shows it, but not really.

I have the same issue. I love the way black liner looks on other people but everytime I try to wear it I think it looks harsh and weird on me. I always wear brown also. I'm trying to get used to it though!

Oh and also guys...one thing that I have noticed is (and you may have figured this out already) If you use black eyeliner pencils (and cake eyeliner) has opposed to gel or liquid...its going to look a lot more subtle. Especially the cheaper pencils...also, some brands have a soft black as well, so you can try that.

Just wondering with your super pale skin what foundation and powder do you use, if any?

Oh, I can name about...a lot that I have tried. I haven't anything yet that matches my skin. I have to blend it all the way down my neck to make sure there isnt a line where you can tell it doesn't match. Right now...I am currently dealing with Nuetrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer, Maybelline Dream Matte Mouse and/or Jane Nearly Foundation Tinted Moisturizer. I wear one of the other, none match...but I have to deal with it. Usually, I'll wear concealer over parts of my skin and then Jane Colorless Powder on top of that.

I would try the MAC foundations, but since nothing else has matched, I somehow doubt that will so I just use the foundations I can find in the pharmacy. Sorry I couldn't be more help and sorry for the babble.

Anyone can wear black eyeliner, imo, just play around with it until you find a look that works for you.

From your avatar pic you can definitely pull off black eyeliner =)
You're prob not used to the way it looks thats y ur a bit unsure of it.

I think it looks really pretty when you apply a beigey frost eyeshadow first then draw a rim around your whole eye with a black eyeliner. I think you could get a away with a thick or thin black eyeline!! Good luck and post us a pic so we can see! x

It depends on so many factors with black. It can be very intense if it's thickly applied. It's a nice look, but if that's not what you're going for, I would draw as thin of a line as possible.

Dark browns can be more subtle and they won't be glaringly brown

It's really hard to get used to if you normally don't wear it! I'm an NW15, and I wore black e/l on my top lashline and lower waterline (brown on bottom lashline) and I got a lot of compliments, but I still only feel comfortable wearing it when going out at night. I think it's more about your comfort level than necessarily "looking bad." I'd start using a black shadow (Black Tied or Urban Decay matte black in trio) are really good as eyeliners.
