brush cleaning

so I was giving my brushes a good scrub just now and I have never found a good way to clean my 182 kabuki or my 204 lash brush. the 204 is so stiff that i really have to scrub it against something to get the mascara off and I don't know what that should be. and the kabuki I'm just never sure how to dry, because I know you aren't supposed to dry your brushes upright.

anyone have any super-brilliant ideas?

I have a system for washing my MAC brushes, and it won't work out any other way for me. I get a small bucket or bowl, I add half a tea spoon of Bumble & Bumble Sea Weed Shampoo or you may use
Bumble & Bumble Sunday Shampoo.

The Sea Weed one is meant for everyday use and a clarifying shampoo, the Sunday shampoo is meant for use of once a week but really cleans up build up left on hair so you may want to use the Sunday shampoo twice a week.

Add lukewarm water into you bucket or bowl and mix so that it's get all bubbly. Take all your eye brushes and run water over them so you can individually place each brush in your bucket or bowl and just swish them around really good then if you want take each brush in the palm of your hand and swish it around in your palm make sure that they get really clean and then rinse them in COLD WATER make sure you get all the shampoo out of the brushes and set them aside. After you have done this for your eye brushes take a clean dry towel and remove excess water and shape your brushes to the way they should look. Set them on a clean flat surface and let them air dry.

Do the same exact thing to your face brushes.
I also recommend conditioning you make up brushes with a good repair conditioner once a week I use Shwarzkopf Repair Conditioner. Just add a drop into you bowl after you have cleaned your brushes, make sure your brushes are wet dip them into the conditioner and leave them in for a minute and then rinse them out in cold water.

Good Luck...

There have been plenty of tutorials about brush cleaning, as well as an extensive thread in the Asked & Answered subforum. Please take the time to do a search.

:C I have taken time to search and I've seen the other tutorials and I have a good method for everything else.

but I was just asking specifically how people dry their kabuki brush and handle the tough bristles on the 205, which I have not seen addressed anywhere.

swirling the 205 in soapy water doesnt get the mascara off and with a cloth or paper towel it just gets the fibers all stuck in it.

and I dry my other brushes on their side with the bristles hanging off the edge of the counter, but the 182 doesn't have enough of a handle to do that, it will just fall off. and I feel like if I lay it flat on the counter it will get smooshed.

so that is what I was asking.

with the 182 what I do for mine is take a wash cloth and fold it over into a small square and then put another wash cloth under that one and then put my 182 over the small edge of it. (it leaves enough room for air drying and something there if the brush falls over) also the 182 takes there abouts 3 or 4 days to dry completely inside so dont put it away when everything else is ready.

for the 205, I would use the mac brush cleanser (dont water it down for this) and wash the brush untill clean, and after its clean. you need to wash this brush after every use. you dont want to use the brush cleanser often like that on your brushes.
^ for everytime cleaner I use baby shampoo

and once every month or two I will use my normal shampoo and conditioner on my brushes, and then put them in the baggies and re shape them for a while after they are dry.

hope this helps

Thanks for posting this question. I too am aware that brushes aren't supposed to be dried upright, but could think of no other options.

I had been mixing just a bit of water and brush cleaner. Applying it to kitchen towel, and just very gently circling the brush on the paper until I got no colour residue. This also saved the brush from getting too wet, and so breaking down the glue.

That said I'll be trying Bebs way now.

I am really loving smashbox's spray brush cleaner. I just spray a towel and wipe the brushes I use on it and put them back in their holder. They do not end up soaking wet and I feel like they are clean each time I use them.

I clean my #205 with MAC's Everyday Lotion Cleanser. IMO, you really need an emollient product to break down and remove an emollient product (in this case, mascara). It gets the brush clean without stripping the brush. After you have removed all of the product; if the brush still feels a little creamy from the cleanser, then give it a little bath with the Brush Cleanser.

If you don't have the Everyday Lotion Cleanser laying around, pick up some Cetaphil at the drugstore. It is gentle and inexpensive.
