I have to agree I hate his attitude, but he's got a catchy sound. Gotta love sampling the old stuff the way he does.
He's performing next week in my town, and I have a feeling there's going to be some serious protesting, not about him exactly, but, well, ok:
About a month ago, our university newspaper (though they're independent from UF) ran a cartoon that showed Kanye West holding a Joker card that had "Race Card" emblazoned on it, and a cartooned Connie Rice saying "Nigga, please!" Now, no matter what your political views, you have to see that it was an amazingly perfect cartoon. Yeah, sure, because Connie Rice, one of the whitest black people out there (who would never use the n-word), is on Bush's team, he DOES care about black people? Riiiiight.
Well, the paper got tremendous flack for printing such a cartoon. Of course there was the cry from a black fraternity member, who said it was degrading to see such a word used (he belongs to a myspace or lj group called "niggas that pledge"). There was the political outcry that said it was demeaning of CR because she'd never say such a bad word. Um, that's the POINT. And then there was the letter from the UF president (who noone likes--mormon from Utah trying to impose his values on a campus that couldn't be further from them) which demanded the paper publish an apology for the cartoon.
I commend the writers and their "apology." They said as soon as UF stopped being hypocritical by hosting people such as Wayne Brady and Kanye West (people whose comedic acts and music, respectively, make use of such a term), they would formally retract their cartoon. But wait, that would cause UF to lose MONEY. Anyway, sorry to babbly on about something that is VAGUELY related to KW, but it has been a constant barrage of KW in this town lately, and I hope he's welcomed rather than protested about, because I don't even want to hear the backlash if he's booed.
On another note, I saw an 80-ish black man wearing a shirt yesterday that said in HUGE letters "George Bush don't care about black people." TOOOO funny.
