Change of colour is pigment pressing...

Today, for the first time, I pressed some of my pigments. Most of them came out great and I can't wait to try them. Two of them have changed colour but only on the top. Quietly turned like a purple blue on the top but when you scrap a bit off of the top, you can see the purple underneath. The same thing happened for Mauvement. Mauvement went grey on the top and I scrapped a bit off the top and it was its normal colour as in the original jar of pigment.

Has anybody else had this happen to them? I was thinking mayble I put too much alcohol or kept it on the straighteners too long.

It hasn't happened to me, but I don't heat mine, I let them dry naturally. Maybe this changes the color? I have heard several people say heating their e/s, in order to depot them, completely changed the texture.

i've pressed most of my pigments and my mauvement and golder's green got discolored on top just like melliqour's!!! do u think it has anything to do with the alcohol or the gold undertones? i've done it with other pigments with gold undertones but those turned out fine.....

I had someone make a 15 pan of pressed pigments for me and it was interesting to see how a few turned out different than they look as loose pigment. cocomotion, which to me normally looks like a light to medium brown turned out gold when pressed. Also pinked mauve looked purple on top- really pretty, then after a couple uses it was pink underneath. All in all Im really happy with them all being pressed instead of loose. Its so much easier to do my eyemakeup when I dont have to unscrew 10 different jars and risk spilling them all over the sink. LOL

I think it has alot to do with the pigment undertones..all the ones you've mentioned that have changed colour are kinda 'multicoloured' itself. Like the Cocomotion can look olivey or gold or bronze or a mixture of all three.

Has anyone had their sweet sienna pigment turn out funky after pressing? I found a picture on Makeup bag blog where it shows the pigment turning out kinda blue vs the greyish/brownish tone you get straight from the jar.

EDIT: I will press this tomorrow to see what kind of result I get!!

Okay I started getting ready to press pigments.....(ran out of pans teehee) and did this all yesterday (the alcohol-pigment mixing). So today I look to see how they've made out (I've not pressed them yet) and my Sweet Sienna totally did change from being browny-taupey from jar to pan to being blue-tinged not more than 24 hours later.....

I went to put them away in a palette and thought I had picked up a blue! Alas, no, its Sweet Sienna. I'm shocked but I guess I shouldn't be surprised!

Hmm, I read through the comments on the pigment pressing tutorial on MakeupBag.com and one stood out at me. It says this: "I actually have a theory regarding the color-changing pigment. I did actually detect some blue in the original swatch which made me assume that perhaps the pigment is made up of (at least) two kinds of minerals: a lighter and a heavier one. You mixed the stuff with alcohol (a liquid!) so what if the heavier one (the actual sienna shade) sank down to the bottom of the pan due to it being heavier, while the smaller amount of blue shimmer in it floated atop? If this is the case you might eventually find yourself face to face with the sienna shade as you use up the upper layers. (Do I sound like a nerd? In any case I’ll shut up now… )"

Sounds reasonable to me, since that has happened with other pigments.
