Cheated at MAC makeover?

Even though I have shopped a lot at MAC, I have never done a makeover. I had always read online all over that there's no charge but you need to purchase a minimum amount in products, so today I figured if I will be shopping anyway I should just do one for the hell of it. When I scheduled the makeover, the lady I spoke on the phone to said that the fee for a makeover is to buy a $50 gift card, when you can then use to buy products (which I had heard also from other people and online). So I did the makeover, bought over a $100 worth of products, then I looked at the receipt and noticed she had charged me a seperate $50 fee for the makeover. I asked her about why I was charged an extra fee even though I purchased the minimum of $50 worth of products, and she said that is how it is and sorry for the misunderstanding. I feel like I got cheated by them because the store was empty and I feel like she was trying to make extra money off me. I never would have gotten the makeover if it was an extra 50 bucks! I ended up paying $160, $50 for the makeover and the rest on products. Am I right to be upset or is this really standard policy?

Oh and also, I wasn't even given a $50 gift card in return for paying for the makeover.

this sounds sketchy as all hell. i would phone back and ask to speak to a manager. If they tell you the same thing call MAC corporate to inquire.

Whenever i have gone for a makeover, i was always told there was a min. amount to purchase (i dont remember how much, might be more cause im in canada, at most 55$) And it was all redeemable right then and there. The MA that does my makeovers always helps me with selecting the products after.

It all depends... If you go to a free standing MAC store, there is a service fee, and I think you get to keep the mascara they use. And if you go to a partnered location, there is no service fee, but you are required to buy for a minimum of $50 in product. So maybe that was the misunderstanding? Either way she should have made it clear with you before putting it through the register.

OMG go speak to a manager tomorrow and bring your reciept! Call in advance to see when the manager will be in and go in person; it is easy to ignore someone on the phone. That is NOT how it works, end of story! If the manager doesn't fix it, go MAC customer service or corporate.

I have never heard of a gift card purchase being mandatory, just that they expect you to purchase a certain amount of product ($50 is what I tend to hear). Mind you, the last time I had a makeover was awhile ago, but it was at a freestanding store, and I only had a minimum purchase requirement.

Here in Toronto, if you got to the Freestanding store, its $50 or $55 but you get a free mascara. If you do the make-over at The Bay instead, then you get the $50 worth of products or $50 towards your purchase so technically the make-over is free.

In the UK, you pay £25 up front but they take that off the products you purchase, so its technically free. Which reminds me, I need to book myself one for my birthday.
