Cosmetics Urban Legends

Let's share them. Today while at Whole Foods, a friend and I were talking about before and afters of celebrities. I made some comment about how makeup takes care of so much of the before photos of celebrities, like undereye circles.

The kid working the register sneered at me and claimed use of cosmetics is the cause of blotchy skin and undereye circles. I just looked at him and left.

Considering I have those circles since I was a small child and not wearing makeup, I have to beg to differ.

I want to hear about other urban legend stuff people believe about cosmetics.

what a rude little snot?!

my grandma is constantly telling me and my other young cousins (i'm 24) not to use lipstick and lip liner. she claims that it will make the natural youthful color of my lips fade. she especially hates benetint. i showed it to her once and she was completely appalled by the idea of me "staining" my lips. i love my grammy -- she's so funny.

people often try one product that breaks them out and proceed to tell everyone that makeup gives you acne. lmao..

This is the only Urban Legend I have heard of about cosmetics.

I've heard countless times that foundation is bad for your skin, but this is completely false if it is a good quality, oil-free forumla..(though obviously letting your skin breathe sometimes it's good for it's health)

There are a few related to cosmetics ingredients which have been posted to the product safety forum- the biggest of them is the myth about lipstick containing lead.

In the late 90s there was an email rumor claiming underarm antiperspirants (or deodorants) are the 'leading cause' of breast cancer in women.

An email alert was sent out warning that waterproof sunscreen can cause blindness in children.

Email hoax claims that popular brands of lipstick contain dangerous amounts of 'cancer-causing' lead which consumers can test for by scratching the product with a 24K gold ring

Love this thread....I know there's a lot more.

The other day someone was trying to convince me that wearing polish on nails (even the clear stuff) makes them ingrown....

So, that last one about hairdye was partially true at one point. You may recall about 5 years ago a lot of dark, especially black, hairdyes dissappeared off the shelves. This was because one of the chemicals in the dye was found to be a fairly strong carcinogen, and had to be removed from the formulations.

Hair dye is no longer a threat, that we know of, in this regard.
