Curiosity: The Basis of Beauty and MakeupArt

This is just really a curiosity that I have about our personal views of beauty and makeup artistry. I find it so interesting to be on here and see all of the different expressions of beauty that are portrayed through the way we do our makeup. What do you guys find to be the foundation of your view of beauty and how you express it through wearing makeup?

I grew up in the city where grunge took off, and for a long time I wasn't allowed to wear makeup. The only stuff I could get away with was very groomed and well painted finger nails.
I think this has shaped the way that I wear makeup because I tend to go for things that are fairly natural, but polished, and detail oriented. I tend to care more about the details that other people might not care to notice. At the same time, I find it incredibly wonderful to just go out with a primed face and nothing else on (what I do most of the times).

One of my favorite looks though has to be the neutral styles of Bollywood, just because it is so precise, clean, and usually very harmonious.

Re: Curiosity: The Basis of Beuty and MakeupArt

I wear a dull solid color uniform, everyday. Makeup is the way I express individuality. People see the face first, so I invest effort into making it interesting. Naturally, everyone finds different things attractive! I look to make my eyes, which are enormous and "exotic", a focal point. I wear lighter lips in a natural shade because I have nice lips. I am older and have a loss of elasticity and some amazing expression lines that I wouldn't have altered. I aim to be the exotic, older beauty.

i spent most of my teens feeling fat and plain, when i was about 15 i started experimenting with different hair colours like bright red platinum blonde etc to make myself stand out. I think i do the same with make up now , i like unique unusual styles of make up to express my individuality i guess. Now that i am more at peace with the way i look i have toned it down a little, its not so much like a mask now! but still love everything different and unusual. I don't want to be recognised for looking like a model but i'd rather look cool and individual with my own look if that makes sense?

As a kid I had BRIGHT red hair- like Ronald McDonald red. I didn't have my brothers coloring (one blond one brunette) so I've always stood out, even when all I wanted to do was blend in.

I'm still a redhead, but it's much darker now. I usually keep to 2 rules w/my makeup: 1. try not to make it look like I have 2 black eyes (purplish-blue eyeshadow will make you think I've lost a bar fight, haha) and 2. try not to make myself stand out. Seems to work for me.

My focus is on great skin. I almost never wore makeup until a year ago, and I am 25 now. My mantra is what my mother taught me: if you wear rely on makeup everyday and do not take good care of your skin, you will look old before your time. She is 56 and doesn't look much over 40. If she bothered to dye her hair black to cover the grey, you wouldn't be able to say she was over 40. Her skin is incredible; I've never seen a single zit on her face, and her face is practically unlined. I follow her advice, have way too many types of moisturisers and cleansers. She is obsessed with toners and 'plumping' serums. She is not heavy into any particular brand except Clinique or cheap. I don't wear Clinique or use their face products anymore; I developed an allergy to them. Anyway, she is queen of the sales and I'd estimate never spends more than $100 a year on her facial products. Frugal pocketbook and gorgeous skin - my face product shopping mantra!

That being said, I've started playing with makeup because I love colour. You can't have colour without makeup. I try to keep things fairly simple, but I am a lot like a 13 or 14 year old trying things out for the first time, because when I was that age, I never did. I'm obsessed with eyeshadows but I may not use them but once a week.

I just like wearing color. Not so much I look like a clown but just enough to pop. I always want my own features to be noticed. I like shimmer, glitter, shine. It's just what's attractive to me.

I wear the color and non-matte stuff, but I always apply it subtly. I was talking to a guy friend last night who went on some rant about makeup. I told him I had a lot of makeup. He noticed upon appearing closer but didn't realize until I pointed it out.

I agree with ratmist, beautiful skin is sooo key. That is my focus right now. I want to find a skincare regimen that will improve the quality of my skin. Aside from that I know diet and vitamins play a large part.

So, lately I have been into a clean natural look. I just want that, "she looks really pretty" look. I noticed that there are women who I see who wear bold color and look more made up but when I see them with more natural, softer looking makeup I find them more beautiful. Less is more and I think it really can make a world of difference. I also noticed that I feel more beautiful when I just do something simple that just accents my features.

Having said all that, it's still nice to play with color. I was looking at my case last night and realizing that I would like to get more use out of the beautiful greens and purples and pinks I have in my collection.

Great idea for a post, btw. I think makeup is a wonderful way to experiment. Unlike more permanent adornments (i.e. tattoos, piercings, etc) makeup is something that can be played with. It is a way to express moods, feelings and artistry.

I love makeup, but I also feel like I have a pretty healthy attitude about it in that I don't feel like I "need" makeup, I "want" to play with it. I am equally comfortable going all out in a dramatic makeup look as I am with a naked face. Makeup should be something you want to do, not something you feel you have to do. You should be comfortable with yourself first.
