Agreed completely! Start with subtle neutral looks and then gradually work your way up to more dramatic. And if you don't have an occasion to wear a dramatic look, wear it to work and say, "yeah, I have a big date right after work so I had to do my makeup before hand." Even if that's totally untrue, if it makes you feel more comfortable, then why not?
I wear a full face to school every other day or so, but usually neutral looks. I just enjoy looking my best, even if it's just school or running to the supermarket. As long as your makeup won't interfere with your job in any way, there's no reason not to wear it if you want to. Makeup can be an excellent way to express yourself and boost your confidence.
I don't know what your complexion is like, but I'm pale with golden undertones and brown eyes, and my absolute favorite neutral day look is:
-a sheer powder or mineral foundation - I love everyday minerals for daytime, because it covers well, but doesn't feel heavy on the face in case you sweat or get oily while you work.
-nylon e/s swept beneath the browbone to highlight
-mulch e/s across the entire lid and crease
-embark e/s in the crease to define
-a little bit of gold mode pigment in the inner half of the lid to brighten up the eyes
-line with carbon e/s and an angle brush rather than with a pencil or liquid - it gives a softer look more appropriate for daytime.
-some mascara, a little blush (my favorite is margin), and a neutral sheer lippie (bare slimshine is a MUST in my opinion) and you are good to go!
The most important thing is to have fun - and who cares what other people think, as long as YOU think you look great!
