Dark brown crease colour for bronzey lid

Hi all. I'm wondering what you think the perfect dark brown crease colour is with a bronzey/golden brown lid. Probably a matte or satin finish or similar.

I love wearing bronze/golden brown shades on the lid such as tempting, go and bronze. I like putting a dark brown matte in the crease with it but I don't have one that I love or feel like looks just right. I have a few dark browns but I don't think any of them work as well as they could with it:

Espresso - not as pigmented or dark as I'd prob like, even when I build it up and can look a bit cool against a bronze then anyways
Brun - too grey/black toned against a bronze
Hadwritten - too red toned
Embark - too red toned (and even looks a bit purplish on me, maybe because I've extremely pale skin?)

I feel like there should be a matte dark brown that has a golden undertone. I know I don't need to go matchy matchy but I just feel that might go best. Maybe something like the undertone that cork eyeshadow has but obviously a lot darker. I've been looking at the other dark browns on the mac website but all I can see (or think I can see!) is more red based or grey/black based browns.

Thanks!

Hi and thanks for the recs :) I had a look at them and their descriptions on the mac website:

Coquette: muted greyish taupe (satin)
Concrete: muted taupe brown (satin)
Mystery: muted plum brown (satin)

From those descriptions I'm afraid I'll have the same problem with coquette and concrete that I do with brun or even espresso (in that they may be too greyish next to a bronze). Coquette might even be a bit light. And mystery is described as a plum brown which I don't like on me and might end up looking like embark does on me. I'm hoping that maybe those descriptions are off though? I've had a look at some pics but it's hard to tell what they're like properly. I'm going to try go in to Mac on Tuesday to have a look at them. Even so, I find the lighting in there (at least in my store) can really distort the colours and it's hard to know what they'll actually look like on plus paired with a bronze. Maybe even if they do look as they're described above they could still look nice with a bronze or nicer than the colours I have at the moment? Could you tell me which one you think might be best for me? Thank you!

Hi and thanks for your input :) I don't think I'd like carbonized for this purpose as I really don't want anything red toned. It looks kinda similar to twinks to me in pics. Even mulch in the crease looks reddish on me, especially when blended out at all. I think maybe my super pale skin brings out the extremes in colours (eg.woodwinked looks very orange gold on me and satin taupe looks purple on me!). Also, carbonized is a veluxe pearl finish and I'm looking for something fairly matte.

i was also going to suggest mystery...but i think it's good you are going in to mac to check them out in real life...maybe you can swatch and go outside to check in other lighting!

i wonder if you have anything like showstopper or maybe dark edge you could try out? i think those may have been LE, but showstopper seems to appear in a lot of palettes!

Thanks for the reply :) I have a couple of other things I want to get in Mac tomorrow anyways so I should be able to swatch the shades ye recommended, take a look at them in natural lighting and then maybe just pick one up another day. I'm not really in a rush to get it, it's just something I'd like to have. I will def have to check out mystery. But even after I swatch the shades tomorrow I kind of have a feeling they might all just look like similar dark browns. It's hard to know what they'd really look like on the eye. The only dark browns I have (that are matte or close) are espresso, brun, handwritten and embark, so I guess I don't have anything like showstopper or dark edge. I'd rather pick a permanent colour just because it's easier to get and I can check it out in real life but if there was a really nice LE one then I wouldn't mind keeping an eye on ACW or blogsales for it.

How come you think mystery would work? I've been looking at it on MUA and people are describing it as "greyish with no warmth or red and cooler than espresso or brun". Seen a couple of people say brun is better. I'm just worried it'll look a lot like brun and espresso and be too cool with bronze. Why do you think it would work better than those (if you're familiar with them)?

Would charcoal brown be any good for this purpose? I know it's not a dark brown like I said I wanted but I've just been drawn to it lol. I have cork, wedge and era which I consider my medium matte (or similar) browns. My favourite is cork. I don't really like wedge on me even though it's very popular, it just doesn't do anything for me. Era looks very similar on me to wedge but is nicer. So would charcoal brown be worth having in addition to those? Could I use it for the same purpose as cork only it be not quite as warm? That's what it appears to me but I don't know.

Thanks everyone!

i don't have espresso charcoal brown or brun to compare to, but handwritten and embark turn out the similar to one another on me, and both warm toned.

showstopper is similar to dark edge, but they are both very very dark and cool toned. i thought they might be suitable from the description of what you liked/ didn't like about the shades you had already tried, since you wanted something that wasn't going to lean red-toned and some of your cool toned shadows you felt were too light....

anyway, it might be an idea to get one of the artists to try an eyeshadow combo on your eyes so that you can be sure you like the effect? let us know what colour you end up deciding on. :)

Pro Longwear Eyeshadow in Make Your Mark... Give that a look too!
It's perm but in the new line with the bigger pans. They are all really nice shadows w/ a wonderful texture.
Let us know what you find that works!

Hi :) FIrst off, I went in to Mac yesterday morning and didn't get to see these 2 messages beforehand so didn't get to check out make your mark. I was really looking for one of the normal eyeshadows so it'll fit in my palette but I would have still checked it out!

I looked at mystery, concrete, coquette and charcoal brown but to be honest I think I'm just as confused as before I went in lol. I swatched them all on my hand and compared them to some of the shades I already had for reference (so I'd have something I knew to compare to in the shop lighting).

I put brun and mystery together and they looked really really similar. In fact when I finished swatching and was looking at other stuff I had to go back to swatch them again as I didn't know which was which and they looked identical on my hand. Even in the pot they were very similar. I asked one of the girls what the difference was and she said they're really similar but that brun is better. I'm thinking now that mystery is too cool toned anyways for what I want as its so similar to brun. Maybe I didn't explain myself very well earlier but I meant to say that brun does have great colour payoff but I don't like it in the crease with bronzes as it looks too cool and grey toned (albeit dark grey!).

I can't really remember what I thought of concrete but I guess I wasn't that taken with it! Maybe it looked quite cool too but with less colour payoff? I could be wrong, I can't remember. I liked coquettes texture and colour payoff. It looked like a kinda weird but pretty colour on my hand in the shop but I wondered if it would be ashy on the eye. Charcoal brown looked quite nice too but I didn't want to buy it until I'd looked at it outside in natural lighting. Plus I'm in no rush to get it anyways. When I got outside I was getting mixed up on which colour was which on my hand (didn't help I'd swatched a good few other colours as well!) but I figured I could work it out later when I looked at them again. I think charcoal brown may have looked quite warm (golden warm not red warm) if I was looking at the right swatch but I didn't look at it properly yet. But then a bit later I realised that the handle of the bag I was carrying pretty much rubbed all my swatches off!

Lol so basically I'm still confused, maybe just a little less so! Thanks for all yer help though. I think I'll have to just check them out some other time and keep an eye on LE shades to see if anything there matches the imaginary colour in my head! :)

Thanks for the suggestions baghdad81. I did look briefly at pics of brown down online before but thought it might be too red. It's hard to know which pics online are accurate though as colours can look pretty different from camera to camera. Swiss chocolate looks like it's too red as well. I just had a quick look on mua at both and am seeing people describe them as reddish too. I don't think I had considered brown script. I just had a look at it on google images and it looks interesting. I looked at it on mua as well and though there's a good few people saying it's reddish, there's also a few mentions of it being orangey which my fit what I'm looking for. I'm not sure if it's dark enough and might be too red but would still be worth checking out in real life some time.

I'm hoping to go to inglot for the first time in a week or two so I might find something suitable there. I've never tried any inglot and don't have a store very nearby so I'm excited :) I think I want to build a 10 palette so hopefully I won't be too overwhelmed by all the choices! I want them to all be neutral so at least that narrows it down! Totally off topic (is there an inglot board here?) but if anyone has any recommendations for anything I should check out while there thenI'd love to hear them. I'm not planning on getting a ton of stuff... maybe a 10 palette, duraline and perhaps a black gel liner and maybe a brush but are there any other must haves I should check out?
