Today I went to Sephora b/c I was looking for a new concealer to try. The last time I was "matched" to anything was awhile back and it was in MAC. I was matched to NC30 (and I've been told numerous times that I'm very yellow toned) and told I should use the NW20 concealer with it with the idea that the warm toned concealer would help with the darkness on my lids and the circles under my eyes. Got it. It makes sense so I went with it.
Lately I feel like the concealer just isn't cutting it. It's not helping the circles and also not helping the darkness on my lids. When I went into Clinique about a week ago to pick up my All About Eyes cream, the consultant and I got to talking about some other things and she said she thought I would be considered "moderately fair" to a "light medium" which I agree with since I'm not nearly as dark as I used to be.
The MA (consultant?) in Sephora was super sweet and when I explained that I was looking for a better concealer she immediately helped me with trying out a few different products. She said she had some of the same issues and the last product we tried was Clinique's All About Eyes concealer in Medium Petal. In the store I really could see a difference so then I asked her about a tinted moisturizer b/c I don't like anything super heavy on my face but wanted something that would somewhat even out my skin so she suggested Sephora's brand of TM and said that it was actually really good quality so I was game. The color she used on me though I think was probably too dark. It was Medium Camel and when I looked in the mirror, immediately I thought I looked "fake baked" and commented that while it did make me look more even I thought it was too dark. She sort of looked apologetic and said that you have to use a darker concealer than normal on dark circles b/c something too light would look grayish which I can see the logic in but then she told me that when you do that, you have to go with a darker foundation to "blend it all in" and I just don't know about that one. I thought the rule of thumb was to try a few different colors and whatever blended into your natural skin color was best.
She gave me a sample of a lighter color but when I pulled the sample out, it still looks too dark and possibly too pinkish for me. I feel bad that I wasted her time essentially and I did get the concealer but now I'm wondering if it's even going to be the right color. I've exchanged so many things at Sephora lately b/c I have been having trouble finding what works for me and I'm wondering if I should just go to someplace like Clinique again or go back to Sephora and get re-matched. What would you guys suggest? Have any of you ever been told that you have to "go darker" with your foundation/TM than normal b/c of a concealer?
