Diamonds are forever?

It's pathetic that people were unaware of this until a movie came out. But hey, hopefully sales will start to decline now.

Diamonds eventually become coal or lead or something like that.

Honestly I dont have that high of an opinion about it.

Im not terribly impressed by Diamonds anyways. Yeah they are expensive, and sparkly,

I'd rather have a differnt type of precious stone any day.

I think the way they are mined in Africa is atrocious. No human should have to go through what the slave laborers in Africa go through, much less to produce some silly metrial item. It's beyond tragic.
I do think diamonds are pretty and I want some but not at the cost of human suffering.
Luckily I have a big huge 2.69 carat rock that has been in my family for generations that is waiting to become my future engagement ring

If I were to want real diamonds, I would purchase an antique or find one within the family and have it reset.

I will admit that I do like the look of diamonds, but nothing will convince me that they're worth the human atrocities.

That's what my husband and I did. When we picked out an engagement ring, we bought an heirloom stone from an estate piece that has a provenance that confirms it is not a blood diamond. I wouldn't have it any other way.

The situation portrayed in the movie, as far as I know, is not present day and since that time, there have been some steps taken (the Kimberly process) to try to ensure that blood diamonds don't make it to the market. I'm sure its done some good, but who knows just how much.

Yay, finally a movie tells people what I've been trying to tell them for years. I wanted to short debeers stock for this movie... but I think it was mostly impulsive. Traditionally, engagement rings are not diamonds... it is the most brilliant marketing campaign ever, as Shimmer stated. Although, I won't lie... I like the versatility and sparkly-ness of diamonds.... so when we went ring shopping I chose a huge white aquamarine in a great cut.... for like 1/10th the price a diamond of that size would have cost my fiance.

The most rare gem is a ruby, I believe.... debeers is just a monopoly.... although I heard there are new Canadian mines full of diamonds that was just bought by a new company.

Oh, ladies... you can actually buy a conflict free diamond.... but expect the prices to be out of this world because there was no cheap labor involved. =(

Well I personally LOVE diamonds ... I don't buy conflict diamonds. Any credible jewlery will give you a cert telling you where the diamond came from and if it is a diamond listed as a "conflict diamond" they will let you know. the diamond dealers i go to don't tell conflict diamonds ... WELL before this movie was even thought of being made. My mother worked as the manager of a huge diamond wholesale company so I've been obsessed with diamonds forever.

Like it was said before, it's sad that it took a movie for people to realize that this is going on. Just make sure if you do buy diamonds they're not from African mines. BUT the one good thing I do hear coming from this movie is that Russel Simmons is actually working on something with his jewlery company. Not sure about the details but it has something to do with buying mines in African and actually HELPING the people of the country. Giving them jobs, benefits and things like that.

Real rubies, not lab created ones, I believe are quite rare, as well as emeralds.

diamonds are made out of coal...basically just compressed pressurized heated carbon...fun!

And they have scientifically created them and sell them...

I personally love diamonds, but then I love other sparkly things as well. I want a diamond ring as an engagement ring/wedding band thing...but I dont want one of those insanely covered rings where you can barely find a spot that isnt diamond....and I wouldnt mind having just one diamond amongst other stones like something pink or emeralds or rubies or something

I found out about it a couple of years ago, after I'd already been married. Had I known before I got engaged, I would have gladly gone for an emerald or ruby ring.

They do have cultured diamonds now. Diamonds that are made. They're actually less flawed than natural diamonds, and you don't have to worry about how they came into your possession.

I don't wear my diamond, not just because of what diamonds have made me think of in the past couple of years, but because I'm always afraid my daughter will get scratched by it.

Oh there's something else I forgot to say ... credible jewlers will have diamonds from africa BUT most of their diamonds are from the middle east. diamonds from africa tend to be less in quality UNLESS you purchase a conflict diamond. did i explain that clear enough?!

basically credible jewlers rather not get their diamonds from africa because to get the best quality they have to purchase conflict diamonds. they purchase most of their diamonds from palestine. at least that's what i was told by most of the jewlers out here ... idk if it varies from state to state or something but i doubt it does.

there are quite a few alternatives... moissanite has sort of a green glare to it =(

however the story behind it seems more beautiful than a real diamond... technically, real moissanite comes from meteorites
