They had you do a demo with the lights out?! Thats a bit odd. To be honest there's no way to really say if you did good because I wasn't there and didn't see it but I'll tell you what my managers do. If you can't finish a full face in 30 mins, you're not getting the job. Usually brows are the first thing you want to do as far as the eyes go and false lashes aren't something you apply for a demo unless they told you otherwise.

But I don't know the manager you interviewed with and how he/she will judge your demo. Worse case you don't get it, just try again. I know A LOT of people who didn't get the job the first, second, or even third time around.

yea i dont kno i feel like i was treated unfairly..the assistant manager was the one who watched me cuz the manager was off that day...and i dont kno what to do bcuz i kno im good it was just the whole sanatizing thing that slowed me down bcuz i had noo clue what to do with that...i just didnt kno what to expect at the demo no one told me and i still did make my model look better than the girls that were working there even if i didnt have the full face on her...im just frustrated bcuz i kno i could bring alot to m.a.c and i kno im talented i just feel like they would be making a mistake not to hire me and i honestly dont want to work anywhere else...and i dont kno whether i should call them or what bcuz my demo was friday and i still havent heard back..what do you think?

I don't know if you got the job or not but it might be a bad idea to start off with the attitude that you were treated unfairly and that you're better than everyone who works there.

No-one really knows EXACTLY what to expect at demo and although I'm sure you did a great job, a little humility goes a long way. If you start the job thinking you're better than everyone you will only be hindering your own progress as an artist.

I'm not trying to be mean, I just think that a good attitude is so important! Just remember, their decision is not 100% based on your makeup artistry skills and they are not expecting you to do EVERYTHING (ie sanitizing) perfectly.

Good luck and remember that if you don't get it this time, you can still keep trying! If you REALLY want this, you will get it, even if it takes you multiple tries. Let us know what happens

With that attitude you wont last long even if you do get offered a position. You wouldn't last a day at my counter that's for sure. If you're above those girls at that counter then maybe you shouldn't be working with them. Sorry I just hate that kind of attitude because it really brings down the team.

On my demo I was allowed 45 minutes (and extra 10 min only because prom was happening during my demo). I did the entire face and everything, including sanitizing properly. I didn't get the job even though I did really well on my verbal and demo interview. I know a lot about MAC products and was very confident, however, many of the girls at my MAC store said they've tried more than 5x and finally got the job.

Although I'm bummed, I'm not SOO bummed to where I'm going to quit trying. The Manager at my store said she's going to go recommend me as a freelancer, which is a start. I say just keep on trying and practice more.

Oh -- and there's nothing wrong with freelancing on the side, if you can't work at MAC.

No, you adopted a bad attitude and you didn't show initiative by asking for help.

I'm sorry for being so negative, but between the attitude that you've shown here and the fact that you didn't have the forsight to at least google some basic sanitation techniques or even ask the assistant manager about them, then I doubt that you're cut out for working in a team environment.

A big part of being hired at a counter or store is showing that you can adapt to strange situations and not get stressed or show any kind of attitude. Managers also look a lot at how someone will fit into a team. They don't want someone to try to only make themselves look good (which is what you made it sound like when you said you made your model look better than the MAC artists on staff were doing), they want someone who will play well with the system in place and enhance that enviroment.

Well said. I think the opinions and advice given to you would be things to keep in the back of your throughout your interview process. You are definitely coming off rather, how do I put this gently, holier than thou with your sentiment towards your model looking better than the staff at that particular M.A.C. location.

But on topic it's hard to judge if you did well or not. We weren't there to firsthand witness your demo.

If the lights were off, why didn't the manager offer you extra time to complete your application? It's unfair to have you continue an application without light coming from somewhere...

The assistant manager is probably amply qualified to oversee your technical interview.

Being GOOD goes hand-in-hand with being knowledgable about most facets of retail cosmetics. Sanitization is a CRUCIAL part of the big picture, and you should have had some knowledge of it. Take some time, hone your skills, educate yourself further on the things that you know you need to brush up on. Like the others said, it's the wrong attitude to have going in or at all.

We just have to be very careful. Re-examine the whole situation whilst being truly honest with yourself and take it as a learning experience. Just think - you'll know how to knock them dead next time with all of the brilliant advice and the sharing of similar experiences here on Specktra!

And if you do get hired, your panic may be your own signal to yourself to make some adjustments.

Um, did you bother to ask to have them (lights) turned back on? I am no MA nor am I affiliated with MAC but I do work in a team environment that also requires self direction and at least some initiative - if your workplace conditions werent ideal - like the lights being out - the then logical place to start would be to request to have them on.
