Do I need to buy the MAC brush for liner?

Hi,

I just started using the MAC fluidline gel- it looks great, but I was wondering if it would be easier to apply if I purchase the accompanying small angeled brush the MAC employee recommended? I bought a less expensive sonia k-version from Target and it's already looking worn. Should I just go out a buy the real MAC brush or is there another brand that makes one just as good?

Try the 263, it's amazing with the fluidliners. The bristles are synthetic so it won't get worn and the hairs won't fly in multiple directions like the 266.

If you have the money, yes go for the #263 or the #209. Excellent for applying fluidliners. Less mistakes and more precise.

If you don't, go to Michael's and pick up some Artist's brushes.

I have found that MAC brushes are actually superior to all brushes at applying cosmetics. Our brushes are made of the best materials possible, and I have met people that have had the same brushes (by MAC) for over 10 years, with all of them still functioning perfectly.

For apply Fluidline as eyeliner, I suggest using the 263 or 208. The 263 is actually a store exclusive, but since it is made of synthetic bristles as GreekChick pointed out, it is stiffer and therefore creates a cleaner and harsher line.

The 208 is available at all locations and is made of natural bristles. This allows the line to appear a little softer, but with alot of use, the bristles do tend to fray and start to get a little wilder, even if taken care of properly. Both are great brushes though! Try them out and see how you like them!

I use the 208 for fluidlines.. and I have noticed the bristles starting to fray and it's beginning to piss me off! lol.
I'll have to look into getting a 263, even though I don't have a store near me.

I haven't. I like alot of MAC brushes, but there are companies that do it differently and who do it better (esp. face brushes). But that is off topic...

If they're cheaper PLEASE SHARE... I have personally discovered that MAC brushes are the best compared to high end brand makeup brands like Bare Minerals, Chanel, Clinique, etc.

Sephora's Brush line is just as good, and in some cases better than MAC's brushes. And those are cheaper. For example, Sephora makes a flat top contour brush, which is an extremely helpful brush to have. MAC doesn't. Stila brushes are the same price relatively. Their face brush is softer than anything I've felt. The eye shadow brushes are just as good if not better and there are some brushes that MAC doesn't make a comparable equivelant to (#7 Precision Crease Brush). Their #11 Face Concealor Brush is a world better than MAC's 192. Paula Dorf's eye brushes are in the same price range as MAC. The Smokie Lid Brush is the world's most perfect brush.
And then there are factory direct brush companies, like Da Vinci (ProBrush.com) and aDesign, etc. Some aren't as nice MAC brushes (Crown Brushes) but some are, and I'd say that the brushes in my aDesign set are comparable in quality to my MAC brushes.

Dont get me wrong, I have a lot of MAC brushes, and I will say that their range of brushes is the most extensive I've seen of any one company (Da Vinci makes a boat load of brushes though) and to be fair, you can't expect one company to have it all, or be the best at everything. I just think it's important to explore other brands not only because of differences in quality, but also because of the diversity of shapes and sizes other brushes come in.

people use the lipliner brush 311 or 209 and i think the 311 is fantastic because it's slightly firmer than the 209 and you get a straight line like with a felt tip marker precise. for thighlining i love the 212..it's stiff and pushes just the right amount of prodct right into the lashes..

Thanks for all the recommendations! I'll definitely check them out - except for the flat top brush. I despiseeeee flat top brushes... Much prefer tapered.

No. I now use a small angled artist brush, and before I used that brush I was using sephora's angled eyebrow/eyeliner brush and the eyeliner brush. However, the eyeliner brush was too soft to use for fluidline. So yea play around and experiment to see what you like/what works for you.

I don't use mac brushes either. I've tried them but my fave eyeliner brush is a cheap one from maybelline. Paula dorf eyeliner brush is nice too.

Don't even get me started on the BE brushes!!!!

They are absolutely ....... well lets put it politely... they are not worth a penny. I brought several thinking I was doing a great thing to go with my BE stuff.... Ouch and after a couple of uses the bristles are had it, totally beyond repair. Please save your money people and forget the BE brushes, use a nail brush instead.... they will feel the same on your skin!
Rant over... sorry.... feel sooooo much better for that.

For Fluidliners, I've started using Lowe Cornell Anuglar brushes which can be purchased from Michael's for under $5.00. It gives a very precise line. I also have the 266 brush but like other's the bristles have started doing their own thing.

You don't need to buy the MAC one but I have had my #266 for a LONG time and the bristles are in PERFECT condition, no shedding or anything!!!!
