Being told that "you're so lucky" when someone sees your makeup collection? No, I'm not lucky, I work hard and pay for my stuff.

Eh, it doesn't really bother me too much, but not too many people see my make-up collection. Except on here...and I feel really accepted in my addiction here

Though the other day I was on the bus and some woman kept commenting on everything I was wearing and saying "oh...that's so expensive! You are lucky!" and I can see how that can be annoying. I feel the only thing I'm really lucky with is having a good work ethic.

Well, in a way you are lucky, not everyone has jobs nowadays because some countries' economies keep going down (like here in the US). There are so many people here that worked for many years in companies and then were "laid off" because the companies needed to cut budgets. Even people that have families to support. So many people can't afford certain things not necessarily because they're lazy. So I guess rather than "lucky" I like to use the word "blessed". I do feel blessed that I can afford certain things because I have the chance to work hard for them.

I find that people typically mean it as a compliment not a literal commentary.

I agree about being blessed and fortunate to have the opportunity for many things that others do not have.

For example, I make a point to not say "I have things in life because I work hard...." because it implies that others do not and there are a LOT of people who work harder and more than me, but I happen to be paid more because of what I do.

IMHO, "working hard" isn't really the difference between being able to have extraneous things or not. Some people work VERY hard just to be able to put minimal food on the table whereas I think little of going out for an expensive meal because my income allows it, but it doesn't mean I work harder than them by any means.

i never get bothered by the saying 'you're so lucky' because i think i am lucky! i'm lucky to have a job that allows me to buy nice things each month

Don't feel silly! It's how you felt at the moment, and it was just a vent. No harm done. Sometimes we need to share our view to see others.

To clarify this, now after reading it over again and it sounds a bit harsh. I only get annoyed when someone says it as a rude remark, like the lady on the bus. She basically insinuated that I shouldn't spend money on the things I like...even though I don't consider them that expensive. But again, it's my money, and I'm not taking it with me when I die, so why not.

Most of the time people just mean it as a compliment, and you shouldn't overanalyze it into meaning something personal about you.

It is pretty sweet to have such a big makeup collection...I mean, nearly every girl dreams of having their own mac counter in their house (
lol.gif
) but not every girl does it. You're right though, I mean it's not all based on luck, because you did have to work hard for it. Yes, you're lucky to have the job which gives you money for it, but you still have to work for the money. And I wouldn't consider myself rich, but whereas one person might like to buy electronics or another person likes to invest their money, I like to buy makeup! So it's all good

No, cause I really am lucky..lol...about 50% of my stash was given to me by MAC when I was an employee, another 30% I bought using my 60% discount, and the rest I bought using my 40% discount (after i stopped working there).

I am fortunate though because I know there are people who work a lot harder, 2 maybe 3 jobs just to survive while I have items that are luxuries.

What makes me more furious is how people will assume a girl who has a large make up collection and an older bf (By 12 years) has had it all bought for her by him.

My bf has bought me 1 set of 4 lipppies, and a set of eyeliners (Excluding shampoo, leg razors while food shopping etc) in 4 years. Everything else other than a few gifts has been bought by me, from my own wages earnt on my own time.

Luck has nothing to do with my make up collection except for a few items which I was "lucky to find".

I don't hate hearing that I'm lucky - because I am lucky that I can afford things I want like make up. What is kind of annoying, is when someone sees my eyeshadow palettes for example and is like "You have over 70 MAC eye shadows??? They are like $15 a piece!" then they do the math in their head, and tell me how much I must have spent... as if I have no clue and as if I bought it all at once.

Really though, I cut back in other areas to feed my MAC addiction
smiles.gif
although sometimes I imagine what my bank account would look like if MAC didn't exist haha
