Do you really need to put a magnet on the bottom of an e/s pan before placing it in a palette? Is there anything wrong with just placing a depotted e/s pan directly into a palette?

There's nothing wrong with it really. I mean, the magnet keeps it in place so it does not fall out, but if you don't really travel with your palettes or move them around more than just opening them, using a shadow, closing them, putting them back - I think you'd be ok without a magent.
But my overall suggestion would be to use a magnet *just in case* =)
