Ebay conflict - not sure how to react

Some days ago I ordered an OPI nailpolish that I am completely in love with on Ebay. It was 5 dollars and 4.50 dollars in shipping to Denmark aproximately. To take advanced on combined shipping savings, I orderede one more OPI nail polish, that I ofcourse like, but well, I wouldn't have bought it alone.

The next day I receive a message saying, that she was sold out of nailpolish number 1 (the one I really wanted). She had sent me nailpolish number 2. I then received a refund on the price for the nailpolish and the small shipping fee for the second item. So now I am left with a nail polish, that I wouldn't have bought alone, and I have been charged the high shipping costs for it.

In my opinion, she shouldn't have send me anything before checking with me, that it was ok for me just to receive half of my order.

Now we have been writing a bit back and forth, but she only writes, that she has already send it.

I am not really pleased with this, but what do you think I should do? Am I entitled to anything? Or should I just let it go?

It would have been nice to have been asked what you wanted to do, but I can completely see the seller's side. The fact that you purchased both nail polishes meant that you wanted both. The seller couldn't have known that you wanted one more than the other, or that you didn't want one without the other (unless of course you discussed this previously). I look at it from the stand point of any online retailer. If they are out of my item, I've always had what's in stock shipped to me, and a refund of what was not available.

She definitely should have advised you BEFORE she shipped anything! I don't think that you are able to file any kind of claim through PayPal or anything though, as she did refund you, but this is still not good business practice.

Maybe you can get her to refund the high shipping and you only pay the additional item shipping as that is what you would have had to pay anyway for the 2nd polish. I think that would be a fair compromise given that she did not contact you prior to shipping. You should try that and if all else fails then I guess you could always leave her bad feedback.

Good luck!

You have a great point. Unless they knew you really only wanted the one before you bought then they could think that you are trying to just say that now to get an extra discount. She may feel that if you didn't want it why did you order it?

For me, if I was ordering an item off Ebay, I would expect it to be available. Why would it be up for auction or Buy it Now if she didn't have it in stock? Even if it was an Ebay store. It shouldn't be purchasable if it's not in stock. That's not how things are theoretically supposed to operate on Ebay. As a business owner myself, she absolutely should have contacted you before shipping ESPECIALLY since you're in a different country. Shipping costs should have crossed her mind. It's just good customer service. Not sure what you can do now. So sorry you didn't get what you had hoped for.

^ I agree, if it wasn't in stock it shouldn't have been up there in the first place. There isn't really anything you can do about it as you did recieve a partial refund. Just leave mediocre (I don't think that this situation merits bad feedback) feedback and explain why you weren't fully satisfied.

Is she getting the nail polish that you really wanted back into stock?

If so could you reach a compromise over shipping on a second item, i.e. that in the interests of maintaining good customer service that she sends it to you at the smaller combined shipping rate?

Decide on a couple of options that you feel are a reasonable compromise (If she isn't getting the second item could she refund you a nominal amount as a goodwill gesture), let her clearly know the options that you feel are fair (including, if it is an option, the amount you feel should be refunded). If she isn't going to do anything or won't reach a compromise with you, make sure that you tell her that you feel the transaction only warrants neutral/negative feedback.

Katjamo,

would you PN me the name of the seller you bought it from? I had a similar experience with one of the larger OPI sellers there and in the end I was pleasantly surprised by what came of the refund.

Take care,

hhhmmm it does suck that she didn't let you know what was going on before she posted it out

but equally i guess because you bought both she assumed you must want the second colour as much as the other one. perhaps you can ask her if she is willing to post the colour you really wanted at a discounted shipping rate for you?
