Exchanging empty products

I am a little confused have heard various people mention taking empty MAC products back to the store in exchange for other products.

Could someone please explain what happens? Thankyou!

It's a recycling program that MAC has called B2M (Back to MAC) where you can exchange 6 empty MAC containers for 1 free lipstick, lipgloss or eyeshadow (which one depends on the counter though).
