Fashion crimes or fashion victims?

The swastika itself was a symbol of good luck and strength before the Nazi party tarnished it. Nowadays it can't even be used in it's original context without controversy.

I think the use of it in fashion in the style of the Nazi party use of it is senseless and bad taste... but it's also a surefire way to ensure publicity for oneself.

It's not only ridiculous because it trivialises an important and horrific time in history, but it's ridiculous also because it's just fucking ugly as an item of clothing.

I don't even understand what fashion has become. They managed to glorify and trivialise anorexia to the point that people no longer view it as a disease but as a commonality, and so I guess Nazism is their next pursuit.

These people need to look at Marc Jacobs, Versace, or Roberto Cavalli. Their designs don't have to be controversial to be popular.

I think the Buddhistic symbol of the swastika is turing the other way though. Not 100% sure but I think that's what I remember...

I think the swastika fashion is just horrible. It's just to get publicity, and a poor way of doing it.

Please excuse my ignorance but can someone tell me what that symbol in the Alexander McQueen stand for? >__<'

In Buddhism, the swastika symbol is a good symbol facing either left or right. It meant good things to a lot of different religions and cultures but the Nazi party gave it a bad name

That's the Iron Cross. Yet another old symbol, this time a military decoration tainted by the Nazis who adopted it for themselves. it's history goes back a lot further than the Nazi party.

I think it was done for shock value but quite possibley it was done to try and give that symbol a new meaning maybe? Just like the Nazis gave it a new meaning way back when. Or maybe it was done as a statement to show that there is still a lot of anger out there about the halocaust. Who knows. I'm not sure it cheapens or trivializes the whole thing though. Maybe it as done to make us think and remember our past and how similar it is to aspects of our present and what better way to do it than with fashion because everyone looks at fashion.

Maybe in a few decades time, this wouldn't have been so bad because maybe then it will be a less sensitive subject and more people will be able to talk about it with out the sadness and hate it often brings up.

For the record though, most runway fashions are fucking ugly to me. Although I quite like the McQ Iron Cross thing.

This sickens me. If for no other reason than because part of my lineage was killed by Hitler.

Thats just awful. I know swastika was just a symbol before, yet, regarding the history, i dont think they can hide behind that. Unfortunately we all have only one major assotianion with it. I think thats awful when people run out of ideas and come up with such "shocking therapy" methods just to keep their name in tabloids. Nazi terror took lots of lifes, thats still one of the worse memories for people. I feel sorry for elder people who can actually see it. I live in Russia, and here and in Europe it would hurt people especially. Its unacceptable for me.

The swastika goes back 3000 years, and was used in many societies. Still to use it the way the designer did was tacky. and the clothes were ugly too.

Seriously, we all know isn't just about the swastika. This is all about Nazi chic. I mean, the Swasitka paired with the eagle, paired with the coloring? Oh yes, let's not forget the military get up. Come on. This has very to do with the swastika alone when all the pieces fall into place. I guess this is why I find discussion of the swastika with any other symbolic association out of place.

Normally I'm not like this in forums online, but I know a lot of people from Germany who are embarrassed by this kind of stuff and feel that they are apologizing for the wrong that other generations have done. It's not good taste and never will be as long as government sponsored genocide (and genocide in general) still exists.
