Frustrated.

Hey yall..

Im getting a little frustrated w/ applying for MAC. I have been calling to follow up and today they told me all the positions were filled, but they keep the resumes on file for 2 years. I guess it feels like Im never gonna get hired.. Ive been thinking about applying for Sephora or something else just so I can at LEAST learn how to work w/ ppl (not on a freelance plane, which is usually working with a specific audience like brides, proms, etc) on a different level. Just feeling a bit down about the situation I guess.

For those of you currently employed, how long did it take from you dropping off an application to being hired in?

TIA..

Honestly from what I've heard from every MA in my area the easiest way to get in the door is to freelance for MAC. I haven't met any MA in my area who started out at a counter or store. I know that it does happen, but in my area it's just easier to start as a freelancer.

If you're interested in that you may want to talk to the manager about freelancing and see what you can do with that.

I actually did apply for a freelance position.. I thought that would make it easier to get my foot in the door. In the back of my head I feel like I dont have enuf experience (Have only done freelance work) on my resume. So its a very 'normal' resume with a little blurb about freelancing. I dunno.

I'm not a good example (put in my freelance resume, called for an interview a week later & was hired on the spot), but I know a ton of people who try for years to get into MAC. A girl I met at Basic had tried for almost 2 years before getting hired.

If MAC is where you want to be, don't give up!

Timing is everything with MAC. I have seen bit of everything like people struggling for years to get with MAC and others who walked in a dropped off a resume and got hired immediately due to the store/counter having a severe need. So you gotta keep plugging away.

Are there any other MAC counters/stores in your area? I'd say you should go to every single MAC location that (you'd be willing to drive to) and drop off your resume to a manager. Like calbear said it's about timing sometimes so maybe you'll get lucky and find a location that needs you!

Just keep trying. Like everyone else said, it is being at the right place at the right time. I know people who got hired really quickly, but I also know someone (one of my co-workers) who was trying for YEARS. She literally begged our manager for an interview. We had a need at the time, and she ended up getting hired.

and she got hired...

and i know another girl who had her resume on monster and the recruiter called her from there, she didnt even apply directly or even have any cosmetics experience, i dont know whats up with that

Im going to another counter tomorrow to drop off my resume and application. Its farther than I would like to drive but at this point I kinda dont care. I was thinking of giving up for a few months then starting to pursue it again around May. So Ill see how tomorrow goes..

You know what really helps alot, though its sad

managers notice you when you look good, dressed well, and makeup hot, buying alot from their store

show up all the time looking good and they will sure notice you and will be able to put a face to the resume

I went to the freestanding store (Somerset Mall) to get an app on Saturday. The MA there was super duper nice and sweet. (Okay first let me start by saying that I felt like CRAP cuz it was the first day of TOM, I had just gotten a really crappy haircut the day before, my depression is bothering me and everyone that worked there looked freaking perfect.) She was telling me that all the positions are filled as well but that I should definitely apply as a freelance. She also told me that once I turn my application in there, they assist in the hiring for all the counters in MI. So I guess theyre like the granddaddy store?? She told me I would need to do a strip of lashes, take the look from day to nite, liquid liner and a precise, darker colored lip. Ive actually only done individual lashes before, never a full strip. So Ill be working on that furiously. I was glad that I went and didnt punk out like I started to. Im gonna try to turn my stuff in this weekend so we'll see how it goes.....

Good stuff! It's good you walked into the "Grand Daddy" store hehe. I didn't know they even had those until one of the MAs at my counter told me I had to go downtown to apply for a freelancer. Just keep practicing. I BOMBED my first interview because I was soooo nervous and very unprepaired. I didn't bring my own brushes and I got stuck doing an entire face with only 4 brushes. I had a 209, 129, 252, and a very woren and feathered 217. So bring your own brushes just incase! Keep us updated on your progress.
