A girl in Manchester, England was arrested and put in jail because she didn't want to be a part of a tutoring group that spoke a language she could not understand.
First .. the source of the article. It came from The Brussels Journal which bills itself as "The Voice of Conservatism in Europe."
A 14-year-old girl, Codie Stott, was assigned to a six-student group to receive tutoring in science at the Harrop Fold High School. The girl had a problem with the group because all of the other five students were Asian and only one of them spoke English. Stott told the teacher "I'm not being funny, but can i change groups because I can't understand them." The teacher then told her that she was a racist and was going to get "done" by the police. She was put in isolation at the school for the rest of the day.
The teacher filed a complaint with the police officer assigned to the school. More than a week later Codie Stott was taken to the police station and placed under arrest. Her fingerprints were taken, as was a mug shot.
According to this article in the Daily Mail, Codie was then questioned of (now get this!) committing a section five racial public order offense. She was placed in a bare cell for three-and-one-half hours. Finally she was released without any charges being brought ... but the matter is still under investigation.
Yes .. it is getting this bad. The left has unleashed the monster of political correctness on our society, and every day we learn of a new absurdity. Sure, this story is about Great Britain, but how long before this type of nonsense reaches our own schools? How long hell!! It's already here! Just look at some of the so-called "free speech" codes that exist on many college and university campuses across the nation.
You can't say anything about it, though. To dare to speak up would, of course, make you a racist right along with Codie Stott!

yes it is.

but what concerns me the most is that with the extream going on over in englad (sorry my lovely English Spectraettes!) then we have concern over here.

The US will most definately not be far behind from England if this goes on. all in the name of political correctness which is the biggest load of BS in the world.

I mean there are some things that just should never be said about a person. period. (and we're talking actual HATE words) but people are TOO easily offended here in this day and time to point of ridicule.

Hmmmm, when I read stories like this, and then see programmes about the swarming gangs of city streets, I can't help wondering if perhaps priorities might be the eensiest bit out of perspective.

While I laud the intent of Political Correctness, I don't see how government can do anything but to encourage us to behave in that area of our lives. I feel, and especially after this lovely example, that PC laws are being abused. The vagueness of terms concerns me, too - that can definitely be exploited to control large sectors of the community.

My final thought on the whole PC thing: once you start controlling people's language, you begin to reshape how they think. I don't much favour government implemented thought control programmes. No matter how noble the intentions, we are left, once again, with government in charge of our internal dialogues. That's never proven to be a good thing.

George Orwell, it turns out, didn't write fiction.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. It wasn't like she took one look at them and assumed that. Geez

These situations always piss me off, because when real racist issues happen, people are going to be more indifferent or think someone is crying wolf. Yes, racism happens and happens every day. This just isn't the case.

Ok really, is it racist to say to someone "You're black." "You're Asian." "You're Hispanic." etc., really? I mean, good Lord, I'm white, there's no denying that, and I don't find it offensive to be categorized as such. I don't get the mindset.

Sadly, Shimmer, some people will be offended if you note their race.

Some people just like to victimize themselves at any opportunity possible. They like the attention, and the idea that they're so strong for overcoming it or something. It's really sad, because they don't understand what real racism is. Personally, I have had racial attacks on me or racist comments made towards me, and I'm always offended when someone trying to empathize with me brings up a story that has no trace of racism in it.

I will have to admit I get tired of strangers off the street coming up to me to ask what my nationality is and not being sated with US. Firstly, it's not your business (I just don't like all of that nosiness from strangers, honestly) and secondly, I'm about as much of a US citizen as anyone. However, there are much bigger fish to fry than that.

I gotta say I have never lost my temper so much as I have with this paper artical. I am beside myself (hence why its taken so long to respond to many of your responses....

I mean this is beyond ridiculous. And you are absolutely right people just like the drama. No other reason! It's all about being the victim of every little thing. And quite frankly - and I will say this and get clawed out-but I think those people who want to be the victim have no life whatsoever because if they did they could realize that there were other things to get pissed about.

Dierdre-when I read your post, I almost wanted to bow at your feet and kiss them because someone gets it. Someone understands what all this PC BS is all about. Mind control. And you are absolutely correct George Orwell did not write fiction.

I'm just waiting on the day when big brother begins to control what we read.

And the best part is-we know that its NOT just an american thing-its becoming world wide and that we need to really really look at this autrocity and see what happens next.

And I have to agree with Beauty Mark, many people *think* they experience racism when in fact they don't. I remember working at Home Depot screaming racism because she herself chose the wrong kind of wood.

I gotta be perfectly frank, I get so tired of the race card being played all the time by all races. Why? Because everytime the race card is played it looses its signifigance. There is racism each and every day, YES but when you scream that someone is being racist when its your own doing then it is not racism! Racism is when you are NOT allowed in a room with another race. Racism is when its NOT just you not allowed in the room but a bunch of OTHER people of YOUR particular race are NOT allowed in the same room.

GAH. AND lets get one thing straight- it is NOT racism (and you all know this but I told you I got BEYOND PISSED OFF when I read this) When you are amoung a group of people who are speaking a different language and you have no idea WHAT THE HELL they are saying!

I have a friend who is White and couldn't go into some of the black bars What makes that any less racist than a black person wanting to go into a white bar?

This PC stuff is BS and it needs to go NOW. Again there are some words that should NEVER be used because they ARE racist and hate words. There are words that some people in our government use to describe a party they don't like that shouldn't be used. But its OK for THEM to say it but for the avg american to say it? We may as well have broken federal law.

I seriously think this country and the rest of the world should be very careful because we are coming and are at the brink of a time in history that we can start a grassroots movement to stop the insanity or we can just let it go on and expect that none of our freedoms will ever be taken seriously and slowly are being taken away from us.

Rant OVER

whoo...
Okay, gotta admit-- that's pretty screwed up. Okay, having the police take the girl in might've been a wee bit wrong, but I need to agree that punishment was in order in this case. If she had been just complaining that her classmates were speaking only in another language and that understanding them was impossible, it would have been an acceptable complaint. I used to help out in an ESL class back in college and we used to require the students to speak in English in an English speaking class. If they really couldn't understand what was going on, then a native speaker could prod them along in their language (prod, not solely speak in that language).
If what quandolak is saying is true and she was refusing to be in any class that had a non-white kid in it AND she was throwing out insults, that's WRONG. I'm not saying it's racist or not, but that action deserved a harsh punishment... but maybe not being arrested (that would be more proper if she reacted VIOLENTLY). Perhaps a good long suspension would've been more correct.

This must be a new development in the story.

I am curious as to this part-because I can understand not wanting to be in a group of people who speak a different language when you are trying to learn and get "tutored" in these tutoring sessions what have you. That's just a waste of time. Point blank: It's not fair for a hispanic person to be thrown in a group of english speaking people while trying to learn the literature. It's pointless and the poor kid has no clue what the hell is going on.

If this is true then it is absolutely unacceptable and that is indeed racism. I still say that it went too far to have her arrested and I do think the teacher over reacted to the PC crap but if this were true perhaps there was another way? And for the teacher to go as crazy as she did (according to the artical thats what I got here folks) that is beyond unprofessional. I know here in the states of that were to happen that teacher would be fired to go screaming like that to a student.

On the websites you posted it doesnt say anything regarding what she did or how she "was" before the incident.

Schoolgirl held over 'racism'
A schoolgirl was arrested for allegedly making racist remarks to Asian pupils because some of them did not speak English.
Codie Stott's family said she was kept in a police cell for three-and-a-half hours.
The 14-year-old was reported by teachers at Harrop Fold High School in Worsley, Greater Manchester, after she refused to study with her Asian classmates.
She was later released without charge.
Codie was asked to sit with a group of five Asian pupils as part of a science class project.
She said she asked to be removed from the group after they began talking in what is believed to be Urdu.
The youngster said she was then accused of being racist by the teacher.
The matter was referred to the school's community police officer and she was arrested and taken to Swinton police station more than a week after the incident on September 26.
Her mother, Nicola Stott, 37, said: "Codie was not being racist. The reaction from the school and police is totally over the top... all she was saying was common sense."
The school is investigating what happened before deciding on what action to take against Codie.

and the 2nd website is the on i posted above.

The BBC Has this to say:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...er/6047514.stm
A 14-year-old girl has been arrested for allegedly making racist remarks at a school in Greater Manchester.
Codie Stott said she asked to be moved from a science group where she was with five Asian pupils - only one of whom spoke English.
The 14-year-old was questioned in a juvenile unit before being released without charge.
Harrop Fold High School, in Worsley, is investigating before deciding on what action to take.
Racism complaint
Codie said: "I asked the teacher could I change groups because I didn't understand them and she said I was being racist and started shouting at me."
A complaint was made and she was taken to a police station.
Her mother said her Codie's jewellery and shoelaces were removed, her fingerprints and DNA samples were taken and she was put in a cell.
The school said it wanted to ensure it had a caring and tolerant attitude to pupils of all ethnic backgrounds and it did not stand for racism in any form. Greater Manchester Police said it took hate crime reports very seriously and its treatment of the teenager was in line with normal procedure.

None of the articles above mention anything about Codie Stott making a racist remark and I have yet to see anything regarding Muslims/Pakistanis. So I have to admit, I'm still trying to figure out where you are getting this from.

All the articals given from actual links in this thread have been saying that it was a Language problem with some Asian kids. There is nothing regarding to prior that i've seen where it has anything to do with muslims.

now do I really believe that a teacher would do that in N. England? To be perfectly honest in todays day and time I wouldn't put it past anybody. Not even someone from Northern England.

Regardless though we can BOTH agree that the incarceration was unnecessary.

Omg, that reminds me of what happened in my AP US History class years back. The teacher was talking about blacks who lived in North Africa, and their involvment in WWII, and she was so afraid to use the term "black" that she actually referred to them as "African Americans." Yes, "African Americans" to described black people living in NORTH AFRICA.

So now we can arrest people for being a**holes? If anything, arresting the girl isn't going to teach her anything, its going to make her more pissed and bitter, and not more senstive to the isolation people can feel when they are new to the country and don't understand the language. (Assuming the Pakistani students are newly arrived - if they are second generation and perfectly fluent in English and just choose to speak Urdu in class, then that is incredibly rude and self-isolating IMO)
