Harajuku disscussion /split from challenge

For clarification, Harajuku girls are not goth-y looking girls. Trust me, I lived in Japan for 10 years, I would know. You barely see Harajuku girls or some call them Fruities in Japan, believe it or not. I've seen few, and they don't have bad black make up on.

They look more like this. Not gothic at all.

Well I'm sorry if I offended and my look doesn't work with this challenge, i'll remove it if you want... i mean i just went with some of the inspiration photos on the previous page

and I asked a friend of mine, and he said:At any rate, Harajuku is a popular shopping district that is the center of individual and unique styles that are showcased in several Japanese magazines - two more well known magazines being FRUiTS and the Gothic Lolita Bible.

so i figured it can be both, or either of the two depending on personal taste

To my understanding, alot of the dressed-up gatherings occur on the Harajuku bridge itself, and many of the people who gather there nowadays look NOTHING like gwen's obssesive idea of harajuku (fruits, ega, egl, "punk," haha ganguro? XD)...
I don't think it would be so bad for the thread to encompass all the ideas/aspects of what is understood to be "Harajuku"

When were you last in Harajuku? Last time I was there, I saw lots of goth looking people. The costumes and make up on many looked very "halloween", compared to what it looked like when I lived there 10 years ago. I have pictues from there from last year- I'll try to post them.

Fun challenge! I'm going to try to participate this weekend!

Unfortunately these girls don't have makeup on, but you can see that they have goth-ish outfits. I did see some people with scary make up- like blood and stuff coming out of their faces.

I'm going back next month. I'll be sure to look for interesting makeup!

Didn't any of you watch America's Next Top Model last season when they went to Japan???? One of their challenges was to dress like Harajuku girls. Basically it's not really goth, but miss matched prints like plaid with polka dots, and ruffles and lace and stuff.

Here, these might help you, they are from the ANTM 3 Gallery"

In response to the recent discussion, I think that all interpretations of Harajuku girls is acceptable.
We could get into the nitty gritty and debate whether is means this style or that, when in the end we are doing a challange that encompasses your personal interpretation and style.....in the end isn't that the epitamy (?) of Harajuku?
Everyone's looks are fabulous and thank you cheapcityhalo, FemmeNoir, and roxybc for the great photos and inspiration that you have provided for the challange.

This would be more an example of Gothic-Lolita, which is quite a differant estetic than the american/european idea of Goth.

The whole point of the challenge was to get peoples different interpretations of what they consider artistry. It isnt specified to one look, and thats why I posted all different looks. People can intereperate as they choose, and it should not be held against them in any regards.

Its supposed to be fun, and I guess a few people are missing that fact. Its not supposed to be text book as to what one person thinks is correct or incorrect.

Spyderfly, your pic was great. Very creative and interesting. Dont worry about it.

Interesting, perhaps Gwen seen the harajuku as an expression ofher own unique style (something maybe she fit in with) I've always loved her style. Don't know much about harajuku though but I like hte pics on this thread better than the goth looking ones.. Its all cool though :)

I found a book at my Univ's bookstore devoted to images of Harajuku girls. They are everything persona-wise you'd find in a strip club. The dramatic, the goths, the cute, the southern, the tough, and now a transformation of "cossies" from RPGs are classified under Harajuku.
