Heirlooms

Lets say that you inherit a $25,000 ring from your great-grandmother, who you didn't know, but is family, nonetheless... Would you sell it? If you would, what for?

Honestly I don't know. I don't think I would because I am very family oriented and would want to pass it down. It must have some significance to the daughter/son and granddaughter/grandson of the great grandmother. But, I'm just kinda weird that way. I would save it for a niece, daughter, etc.

Unless my situation was dire. Then I would have it appraised and sell it to take care of myself/family.

Im the same way as you. I ask because there is a girl at work who wants to sell it to buy a car or home entertainment system.... which kills me. She claims no emotional attachment to the ring...

While some of us have a very strong bond to our family and would take such an heirloom as something you would pass down generation to generation, not all of us think so. I personally would probably keep the ring, but it really does depend on each individuals situation.

While I can see this point of view- who is to say that even though she doesnt much care for sentiment, that her daughter, or granddaughter might care immensely for it?

i'd keep it.

tastes change, priorities change. someday in the future you may regret selling it off for some instant gratification that is now worthless.
