HELP!!! What Do I Charge for Kiosk as a Freelancer?

I have someone who wants me to work at a makeup kiosk for Iman as freelance Makeup artist.

I am not sure what to ask for an hour- it takes me $10 round trip in gas just to get there, and I want to make it worth my time, yet our area is not as high priced as the cities usually are.

I usually do private clients- this is a new thing for me and I do not want to undercharge, nor do I want to ask too much either. I was thinking perhaps $20-25 an hour. Is that too little?

Any input?

Also, I would be working on caucasian and dark skinned people with Iman makeup, but then I might get asked to do weddings as a result- I have not been able to build my collection of foundations for darker skin yet- what do you recommend for good foundations for weddings- esp for darker skin?

How is MAC foundation for weddings and photos? I do not have a huge clientele yet so I can not pay a lot for expensive foundations at this time, but once I get started I can.

Thanks for any advice or help!!!! I want to be prepared before I talk with this lady about the job this week. I don't want to waste my precious time if I don't get paid enough either. But I don't want to overprice either.

Some of the girls that I have talked to locally only charge $20 a face and I think that is too little.

Are you going to be working at a Sephora or similar place? Usually, the going rate for someone who freelances for a line is from $15 - 20 max, depending on experience. That being said, you're not working a ton of hours and most lines will provide you with gratis. I am just telling you my experiences and rates down here in the South may be lower than where you are.

As for doing weddings and such, it also depends on what the market is doing. There was a time that a MUA could demand over $150 for a bride and $100 per each bridesmaid. Now, there's a glut of MUA (some very talented, others not so much) that you'll find them doing wedding for $40 for the bride and $30 for the bridesmaids...people don't want to pay for the services, yet demand absolute perfection.

Anyway, hope this helps some...

that helps a lot.

I live so far away that it really is not worth my time to get any less than $20 an hour, and it is only at a kiosk- those little stands in malls where they sell things from. I imagine that is probably too much and with the gas money alone it would not be worth it.

I would not mind doing weddings, but I don't want her to be upset if I do not take the job and not recommend me for requests they get for MUA.

I am not looking for a full time job and even more than a day a week or so is a bit much for me. I don't mine freelancing for special events or once in a while, but long term is too much right now. I have to be home with my daughter. She often comes with me to my local jobs so that is rarely a problem. She loves MU too.

This, however is another situation entirely.

Your insights help a LOT- thanks.

Our area is very penny pinching. People do not like to spend much for things. I usually get $20 an hour for the local jobs I do, but I do not charge mileage.

I am not sure what I am going to do, but I know I have to call her today sometime.

Thnaks for taking the time to give my your input- I really appreciate it.

Also remember, they are paying for your talent, time and travel. (c) My favorite MAC MA April stressed that to me. :p

Thank you, that is so true. I really need to remember that. I have so much else I can do that if I am not paid well for my time, then I would prefer not to go.

What would you think is a good price for weddings- this woman told me today that she wanted to keep me on her list for weddings and such when I told her that I could not work part time for her.

I told her $20 an hour which I thought was fair - not great- at special events and such, NOT including travel time.

I am afraid that is too little- locally I don't mind because I can get home pretty quickly, but far away and for more formal occasions, I am thinking that $20 is way too low.

Our area is a very penny pinching area. They do not like to shell out too much, but I would prefer not to work if they won't pay me decently for it. I won't go lower than $20 an hour.

How is that- any feedback?

as far as building up your make-up supply

I work as a MA for a photography studio, as well as freelance for myself (the photography and Make-up) I found some of the best products (other than MAC) that really holds up to the test as far as a photography make-up and for brides. Its the only place I have found that I can use the foundation, and have the coverage that I need. (I have a portwine birhtmark, the size of my hand, that covers my face) anyway, It is sweatproof, waterproof, and doesnt break out my skin, and I can sleep in it(when I am way to tired to wash it off) and the next morning it will still be there. But it comes off wonderfully with your basic skin care. It is so cost effective as well. It's from a private label called http://www.ladyburd.com/ Its fabulous. I had to build up my collection with very little funds, and until I can actually get my Interview (this wednesday...YAY!!!!) then I will buy tons more MAC..Anyway, I hope this helps you out some
