i think a difference in quality is to be expected to some degree, no? i personally think that the brush sets are a good deal if you're starting your brush collection as well as for traveling, but if you own all the full sized brushes (or the majority) of the brushes in the brush set... i probably wouldn't recommend them. otherwise, why not!? you get a lot for your money!!
granted that there's naturally going to be a certain tradeoff for getting all those brushes for $48 when the 187 included there is originally $42 on its own.

The SE brushes, in general, are definitely not the same quality as the regular brushes largely because they are not hand made (i.e. they are mass produced) and usually the hair quality is not as soft as the regular ones. However, I must say that, comparatively, this year's holiday face set is of better quality than those presented in past holiday collections. The SE brush sets are great for travel, and for those starting or in the process of building their collection!

I have the face set w/the 187se and I really like it! The only brush that's so-so to me is the 168se, but I bought the set for the 190 & 187 and they do the job well for me
Plus, as a set these brushes are only $12 each so very worth it IMO. HTH
