How To Use Black Shadow?

I love the dramatic looks that you girls create using black tied and other dark shadows but I have such a hard time creating any kind of look with dark shadows! I usually end up getting it all over the place and it just looks like a mess. Can anyone give me some advice on how to make it work? I noticed that some use the 219 brush a lot...does that make a big difference? I tried using a Q-Tip but it didn't work well for me...

What type of look are you trying for? Do you mean like, when we use black shadow to add depth to other colours, or where the black is the main colour used? If you have any pictures of what you're aiming for, I could probably help you out.

And as for making a mess with the black, try one or both of the following. I always make a mess no matter what colour I'm using, so I use some sort of loose powder beneath my eyes, as you can easily brush it all away when you're finished applying your eye make-up. Secondly, and this is my own, person, really weird tip, but it works quite well; I have an adjustable mirror that I've mounted on the wall higher tham I am when I'm standing. When I go to apply shadows that are messy, I angle it downwards so that I'm pretty much tilting my backwards until it's horizontal. It's sort of uncomfortable, but gravity won't be stealing your eyeshadow! If you don't want to mount a mirror to your wall, you can just get one of those mirrors on a stand (the ones that can angle up and down) and put it on a high shelf.

And as for the 216, I really like using it for adding depth the parts of my eyes, such as the outer V and the crease. You have to be careful with this brush though, if you don't tap off the excess, you'll get more fall-out with this brush than you would with a lot of other brushes. However, the shape is perfect for outer V and crease, and allows you to apply the black more accurately.

So if you have any pictures of what kind of look you're going for, I may be able to help you out a little better.

I usually use the darkest color in the outer corner of my eye and blend with another color close but lighter for the other 2/3 of my eye.

I then blend above the color with something lighter so it's not severe.

I'm not normally a fan, but I find I get better control with sponge tip applicators when it comes to dark colors, especially if I want it fairly defined and the shadow contains glitter.

yes the 219 or any pencil brush is a must when using black or dark shadows. concentrate color with the 219 in our outer v or crease then follow with a crease blending brush like the 224. check tutorials section, there are a lot there with ladies using carbon or black tied.

Thank you everyone! I did end up getting the 219 brush and I really like it. I've been through ever single page of the Tut's section and still can't find something that works for me. I have really small eyes so I really don't have much room to work with...

I hate using Q-tips to apply shadow it's good for clean up but not for applying. Use a good quality brush for dark shadows, and blend well!!
