I Need Encouragement! Skills v. Experience and Working For MAC

Ok so I am very good at applying makeup. I am very artistic, applying makeup is like a talent and passion I have, I don’t just something I do for fun. I began my portfolio and it is looking excellent. HOWEVER!!!!.... I don’t have much experience I can put on a resume.... (I only worked at a counter for six months)

MY QUESTION IS!!!!!!!!.......does excellent makeup skills outweigh "paper" experience? or does experience outweigh makeup skills?

Because.....I would like to apply to MAC after I finish my portfolio!!!!!!!

Re: I Need Encouragement!!!!!

Well you can't change the past, and don't let other comments dissuade you because really, each situation is unique, your personality, skills, etc.

So apply and go for it! Some have to try several times, so if you don't get it right off the hop don't be discouraged, keep trying!

Like gigglegirl said, each situation is different. In my case, skills outweighed experience. I never had a job before MAC and they decided to take a chance on me, and it's all worked out.

However, most if not all other MAC artists I have met had previous (usually makeup/retail) experience before-hand.

I worked at a Lancome counter as a seasonal employee, I did have retail expereince prior but no makeup application except family and friends.
I did however start to create a portfolio of my work. Some of which I laugh at now becuase I see how much my skills have improved. MAC was impressed and when it came to my demos I did very well and was hired as permament PT MUA!!!! So follow your dreams!
Good Luck!!!!

in my experience, they were glad i had more retail than field work under my belt. but its different for every location. i do know however that they want you to be open to their style of teaching, and they think thats harder if you've had experience elsewhere.

but just go for it. you wont know what'll happen till you try.
