Hey guys,

I have some time on my hands these days and wanted to read some good books. My latest favourites were: "Cellist of Sarajevo", "the Kite Runner", "Things I've been Silent About" and last but not least "The book of Negroes".

So yeah, anything I can learn something from, history, books about cultures I don't know about, or even biographies of amazing ppl (I read Lincoln's and looooved it). My no no's are romance, sci-fi and fantasy type books.

Thanks in advance

Here are a few for you - I do read scifi and fantasy, so I will leave those out.

All of the below I really enjoyed (some are fiction, some are non-fiction/memoir):

Life of Pi - Yann Martel

Anne Frank - Melissa Muller

The Bookseller of Kabul - Asne Seierstad

The Glass Castle - Jeannette Walls

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon

Three Cups of Tea - Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin

You should read the book, it's better than the movie. Though I always like books better than movies

Running with Scissors was an amazing (and hilarious) read...put the movie to shame (most books do, though...), A Child Called It was incredibly moving, but VERY tearful...and The History of Hell was an EXTREMELY interesting book...obviously not straight up history, but I'm usually bored to tears with history books, and this one held my interest.
I don't know how interested you are in forensics, sciences, etc, but Never Suck a Dead Man's Hand was a hysterical read about a real life CSI and her random "adventures", Dead Men Do Tell Tales was also very good, it's about Forensic Anthropology, and Death's Acre, which is about the Body Farm. Also, all of Dr Henry Lee's books are extremely interesting.
HTH a little!

Memoirs of a Geisha was wonderful.

I read alot of forensic mysteries.. Kathy Reichs is one author I love, she's a real forensic anthropologist, so that makes her books more "real".

Also love Patricia Cornwell..

Lisa Gardner,a thriller author, who's book The Other Daughter I just read, is amazing.. I hear her other books are equally amazing.

Jane Austen is a great read. It's romance, but not in a Fabio sort of way. I'd recommend Pride and Prejudice to start.

I'm in the middle of reading The Kite Runner right now, it's really good.

The Russian Concubine by Kate Furnivall sounds really good. I just borrowed it from my boyfriend's sister and I haven't had a chance to read it yet. It's about a Russian girl living in Communist China in the 1920's and her subsequent romance with a Chinese man. While it is a romance it sounds like there will be a lot of history as well as far as how life was in China in the 1920's. My boyfriend's sister just finished The Kite Runner (she loved it) and as soon as I'm done reading The Time Traveler's Wife (which I'm in the middle of) I'll be reading The Russian Concubine and The Kite Runner.

Shadowy Lady : Purely genius post and I hope that people can add to it because I run out of book ideas if I'm not careful. XD

ForgetRegret mentioned A Child Called It and she's right that the book is amazing despite being really emotional. You see someone go through emotional and physical Hell and come out optimistic still....I've passed a copy to a friend.

MACForMe mentioned Memoirs of a Geisha and she's right as well. I made the mistake of buying the 2 disc dvd first and then learning of the book...the book was better.

Culture wise : Princess and Princess Sultana's Circle by Jean Sasson was amazing but it's very detailed. Wealthy family in Saudi Arabia and an account of what the females were being put through....Princess made the list of 500 Great Books by Women but it's highly emotional to read....women's rights were thrown out the window is all I'll say.

Familiar Strangers by Gotham Chopra was amazing because he covered so many different cultures within one book. It was very enlightening for me to learn about cultures I didn't know about.

I'm currently reading My Booky Wook by Russell Brand but it's one of those biographies that's catty, dark and humorous to highlight the negative points. Comical yet tragic.

PS Your makeup for your anniversary looked amazing and congrats on such a happy occasion.

ForgetRegret, I went through my bookshelves because I saw your blog and was like what would match up past what was already there. Thanks for the Running with Scissors heads up because I've got the movie but never knew there was a book....freaking dysfunctional house that was. XD

~~Wicked by Gregory Maguire, written from the point of view of the wicked witch of the West....freaking loved it.

~~Good Omens and any other Neil Gaiman book.

~~Apathy and Other Small Victories by Paul Neilan has gotten a small cult following....this book was a gift from a friend and it's genius. Dark comedy for sure but hilarious. One of my faves.

Thank you all girls, I need to save this thread somewhere so I can always find good books to read. I read the Memoir of a Geisha when it was first released years ago and I agree, the book is much better than the movie.

I'll add some more that I enjoyed quite a lot:

- A Thousand Splendid Suns - If you liked Kite Runner, this is the more dramatic version, I couldn't stop my tears
ssad.gif

- Reading Lolita in Tehran - OMG! and I'm not being biased
winks.gif

- Papillion - this one was made into a movie years ago and the movie is actually really good but once again the book is better. I read it in the original French but I'm sure the English version is excellent too, haha!
- A Tale of Two Cities - this is my favourite classic ever.

The Kite Runner is such a good book. My favorite book is The Catcher in the Rye (J.D. Salinger) you've probably heard about it, I think it's a great book, I've read it five times, it's that addicting. Angela's Ashes is amazing, and so is The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

I've been reading tons of JD Salinger lately, he cracks me up. I'm almost done with Nine Stories.

Philippa Gregory's books are my favorites EVER! "The other Boleyn Girl" it's one of my HG always reading it.

Whenever I'm reading a book from her, I just get hooked! She mix the history of the great Kings and Queens with fiction, it's addictive and you learn a lot!
