I think theres something wrong with my make up brushes!

I dont know if this is the right place to post this but i think theres something wrong with my brushes. i just washed them (theyre all mac) and i use mac brush cleansers. i put a little of the cleanser in a shot glass and put the brush in for a couple of seconds to let the cleanser sink up the brush, then i wipe the brush on kitchen roll and keep on doing this until no more makeup comes off of the brushes. well tonight i noticed that the colour that was coming off of the brushes was black!! and this was from my 187 (x2) brushes and my 150 brush and my 116 brush. is it dye thats coming off? im really worried theyre ruined! ive laid them on kitchen roll to dry and i just lifted them up and the kitchen roll looks a bit black where the bristle end of the brushes are. can anyone shed any light on this for me?

first off, if you are soaking your brushes in cleanser, you need to rinse them (handle-side up so that water doesn't get into the ferrule, causing the bristles to fall out). if you don't, the cleanser dries up in the hairs and hardens your brushes. to clean them, you really only need to pour a little cleanser over the brushes and wipe back and forth on a papertowel till all the makeup comes out.

secondly, yes it is dye coming off the brushes. there is no need to worry about that. all the black-haired brushes are dyed. just make sure they are completely dry before using them or you will get the black dye on your face (not a pretty site!).

ok, ive just rinsed them under the tap handle side up. i was so worried id ruined all my brushes! is it normal for dye to come out? ive had them for a few months and its the first time its happened!

how many times have you cleaned them since you've had them? have you cleaned them this way before? soaking them in brush cleanser is called deep cleansing, and should only be done every few months or so, not everytime.

it is normal for this to happen. some of my brushes at work still do this. it is probably because they are from a different dye company than the ones that don't bleed. it doesn't mean that the brushes are bad, so no need to worry. because this is happening, you will notice that your brushes may seem blue or purple. that is from the base of the dye that is left on your brushes when the majority of the dye washes out.

since you have soaked them in brush cleanser, you need to make sure all of it is rinsed out. while running them under the water, gently squeeze the hairs. you will notice suds (soap bubbles) in the hairs. keep rinsing and squeezing gently. once all the suds are gone, you've gotten all the cleanser residue out. lay them on a towel to dry completely overnight.

its the first time ive cleaned them this way. i usually do it the way that you said, put a little cleanser on the bristles and wipe the brush on kitchen roll until all the make up is off. so il stick to doing it that way for the majority of the time then and deep clean them every couple of months or so. i was so worried that id ruined them. i think ive got all of the cleanser off the brushes now. thanks for ur advice!

Did you buy them from MAC directly, or swapped or Ebay-ed for them?

I have always washed my brushes with baby shampoo once every two weeks ..and spot clean in between uses with clinique spray on brush cleanser ..I haven't experienced the dye coming off ...but I have read other uses complain about the same thing. Are you supposed to Dilute the brush cleaner maybe ?

I always dilute my brush cleaner in a bowl... Then I dip + swirl my brushes in the bowl for about 10 seconds each. I thoroughly rinse them each, dump the water, add brush cleanser + water, then do it again.

The only brush I ever had dye come from was my [Pink BCA] Smashbox 19 brush. The bristles were originally black, but now it's brown... Anyway, it still drips dye whenever I wash it, but it's fine once it has dried.
