"I'll fix your brows"

Not sure if this is the right section to post this, if not please move it to the correct place.

Well I live not too far away from a mall (about 20 minute walk). I go there a lot sometimes and other times I won't be there very often. But a few months ago I was walking around and came across this little kiosk in the middle of the first floor. They were doing threading and I just decided to take a quick look, wasn't too interesting in getting anything done at that time. I'm also really paranoid about other people doing my brows.

An older woman was working there and greeted me. She kept persuading me to come sit down and let her thread my brows. I said that I was just looking and wasn't interested in getting anything done at that moment. But she kept on insisting and even went as far as handing me a mirror and pointing out everything that was wrong with my brows. I won't lie they didn't look all that great but I was trying to let them grow out and still am (the hairs grow back in all the places where I don't need them to be growing and they get LONG too). This goes back and forth for about a few minutes and she decides to point to the sign she had up showing before and afters of brows she had done. I wasn't really impressed, the shape and everything of all the brows looked all the same in the after pictures! I don't want my brows looking like the girl next doors brows. I think that everyone's brows have a uniqueness to them and I like to keep that in mines but still have them looking polished. After seeing the pictures, I again declined but she still tried to get me to sit down and let her do them. She didn't even mention how much it would cost and at that time I only had $2 left because I had done a MAC haul right before. Finally she gives up and just hands me a flyer for her kiosk and tells me to come in whenever I stop at the mall next time. I just said ok thanks and went on my way.

Now just today I was at the mall again with my mom. I had just gotten on the escalator with my mom right behind me. I look up and guess who I see?! The woman from the threading kiosk! She smiles at me and says hi, and does the whole your brows REALLY need worked on and that you should come to me, I'm really cheap and I do a great job blah blah blah. I just kept it nice and said okay. Then she pointed behind me and asked who the lady behind me was (my mom). She tells me that I should bring her too because she needs worked on too also. Again I just said okay in a friendly manner. Finally we get to the second floor, and I'm like thank goodness! I mentioned it to my mom what she had said and that I had ran into her a few months back.

Her whole approach just made me feel so insulted. I think there are much better and friendlier ways to try to persuade a customer to use your services. I just hope I don't run into her again, haha hopefully if I do my brows will be done growing in and properly filled in unlike how they were today.

I can't stand people like that! Every time I go in and get my brows waxed she says "lips too?" I'm like uh no thanks and I notice she doesn't ask others. Of course that made me paranoid lol...but I know she didn't mean it rudely, but idk I just don't like people that make you feel uncomfortable about that kind of stuff.

I know! Like some people are just so tactless! Like I think in the beauty industry when you are trying to get consumers to buy YOUR products or services, that's the last thing you need to do. Before she started pointing out practically how bad my brows were, I was considering coming back later on and actually maybe giving her a try. But after that and seeing the before and after pics, no thanks! I'd rather go somewhere and pay a little more where they make me actually feel good about myself and valued as a customer.

It's funny because after my first encounter with her a few weeks later I returned to the mall and went to the Sephora there. I was talking the girl who was behind the cash register and the subject of brows comes up. She tells me that she goes to the threading lady at the kiosk to get her brows done and that she does an ok job. So I mentioned what happened to me to her and she completely agreed that she was treated the same way by the threading lady!

Hmm, we have a threading kiosk too and when I went to watch what they were doing they approached me the same way. My brows are def a work in progress but seriously I don't need to be told that in a rude way. So I left and came back for her to do them *sighs* They looked GREAT when I left but seriously a few days after they started growing funny and looking like even worse crap! So of course then I return to my reg wax lady and she proceeds to tell me how un-even blah blah blah they are. That's the same thing the other lady said. Well then she jacked them up even worse. Ughh, everybody says different things and my brows do the suffering

Oh, I also have long haired freakin eyebrows and they are such a hassle. I have to go constantly just for her to trim those little monsters!

girl i know exactly what you are talking about! i hate being at the mall and have those kiosks in the middle lane of the walkway and the people hound you, and the mall here is huge, and there are so many vendors, and the annoying ones are like the people trying to sell Dead Sea products, which I got suckered into buying...the ladies & guy that sell flat irons, and will do a portion of your hair while everyone's watching...i'm also guilty of letting them do my hair. hehe. and the guys who do 10min massages for $12. plus we have the threading kiosk, the teeth whitening kiosk, which is done with the uv light stuck to your face in plain view of everyone walking by. wtf!
but geez that's so annoying, that lady thinks by pointing out things she thinks are flaws it's gonna help her get business..? Nope!
sometimes i'm just not in the mood and need to buy something & leave and they will ask me as you walk by "Can I ask you a question", or "Can I show you something", and i'm like "No" or "I already bought some", and keep walking and usually will avoid eye contact at all costs.

Omg, I seriously have to trim my brow hairs EVERY week or else they'll go "Rapunzel, let down your long hair" on me!

I wouldn't of been able to let her do my brows, I just can't stand being nice (especially giving them my money) to people who are rude to me in any way.

Aww, I'm so sorry! You should stick with your regular waxer! It's hard finding a good one at all!

I haven't let anyone else touch my brows in like 2 years or maybe even 3 now. I have had way too many bad experiences with getting them waxed that I have given up on the idea of having someone else do them for me. Although the nail salon by my house, the owner there does an AMAZING job but in order for her to do my brows properly I'll need to let them grow out a lot more. She leaves them a bit thick but very well arched and I'd rather have them a bit thinner but don't want to push my luck. I can't afford the extra $6-$10 bucks a week cause they are such hairy beasts and grow back so fast. It's money I could spend at MAC
mac_addict.gif
lol. So I just pluck and trim them myself now and just keep trying to get the shape right each time.

I'm like ALWAYS being approached by the people at the kiosks and even the independent cell phone places (there shady)! It's like I'm a freakin magnet. I never buy anything from them though like ever.

The dead sea people here at my mall are actually nice and aren't THAT pushy. Well at least they don't insult me! I have had them give me a demo of there face products on my hands twice because I felt bad and didn't know how to say tell them that I wasn't interested. Especially when I asked how much there mediocre products were. They tried this heavily silicone laced product on my hand and kept rubbing it in and then told me to feel how smooth that area of my hand had felt. Well of course, silicone is def going to make things feel smooth! The products that the guy showed me came up to be over $150 total. He told me that they were having a special for just that day only an that he would cut the price in half and it would only be $75. I seen out of the corner of my eye a sign they had out that said, "Sorry, no refunds or exchanges." Well sorry, no purchase then! I have too sensitive of a skin on my face to play around with different products.

There was a straightening iron kiosk here too a few years ago. I let them do a demo on a few strands of my hair and again wasn't too impressed. I thought they were quite overpriced for how they performed. Maybe I have too high of an expection, meh Idk
th_confused_new.gif
?

At my mall they actually had an actually storefront rented out for massages so they don't go out and try to get people to come in there. I have been tempted to go in and give them a try cause my muscles are like always sore. But I don't have the money to spend on "unecessary" things.

Theres a teethwhitening kiosk?!
shockt.gif
I would only considering looking like a weirdo with sunglasses on and my mouth wide open with things inside it out for the whole public to see if the price was right. If not, I'll just take my cash and go to my dentist and have it done in the privacy of his procedure room.

ugh, that's annoying. Back when I used to get gels at this old nail salon, the ladies would always try to upsell an additional manicure when I would just come in for a fill and they would INSULT my hands (which, might I add, were just fine) as a tactic for selling. It drove me crazy.

What you said reminds me of this video: YouTube - Nail Salon - Anjelah Johnson - Comedy Time

Lol, "That's why you have no boyfriend".

I know, they act like insulting you makes you want to get other stuff from by them. For me its uhh HELL to the NO! I'm really big on customer service and I guess the whole shopping experience.

I'm going to the mall again today I think to meet up with an old girlfriend and I hope I don't run into the lady again lol.

I forgot to mention that my friend and I got called out by the cell phone guys again. I just nicely told him that I we aren't interested and that we were in a hurry to leave. They are like constantly calling me out, you think that I'd know that I'm already with T-mobile (they sell there products and services) and already have my plan extended already?

Those people are rude. One day, I'm going to make myself spend a minute telling them how NO ONE in the beauty industry would insult a person for a sale. I don't know what the hell is with their pitch, but they may actually garner some interest if they weren't so pushy and unprofessional. But, furthermore, I don't want my beauty services done out in the open and 20ft. from Chick-Fil-A!

Lol the mall here isn't TOO far away from a Chick-Fil-A, you could walk there!

I don't understand what goes off in their minds telling them that by insulting someone they will be making a sale?! Another time a few years ago, there was this MA at Shiseido who attended to me whenever I was interested in some products. I thought we had we were done talking and I was going to leave the counter to look for other stuff until she just HAD to mention my under eye bags. Yes, they aren't the prettiest things ever and she was like, "Your so young and everything is so pretty about you BUT those under eye circles and lines." I seriously wanted to run out and cry.

to me this is just another way people are trying to sell their sevice.
When I get my eyebrows threaded they say.. upper lips too? trying to make you feel like... oh is it noticible that I need my upper lips done? They've even tried that on me when I waxed my upper lips the day before--so I know they are just trying to get that extra 5$ (or however much it is).
They are just trying to upsell and make more money. Some people are persistant about it and some aren't. It's like they want you to feel insecure about something so that fear will make you do it.. an old selling tactic.
I wouldn't be offended.. its just the way some people do their business and try to make money.

I get what you mean. Like bringing out people's obvious physical flaws can lead to insecurity which in turn gets them to try to do something about it-buying products/using services from that person or company. It just doesn't work on me regardless of how shitty they make me feel inside. Now I don't want someone to suck up to me completely and go on and on about how perfect I look and how I look like a model (pshh! yeah right!) but I don't want someone putting me down either.

That would only be a selling tactic for a person who is not a professional. As a cosmetologist, it offends me. And, it's laughable that one, this lady is working from a kiosk for such a personal service, but it's all the rage today. Personally, I wouldn't want my 'stache touched up in the middle of the mall (which may not be the case with this particular person, but we have one here right outside of Dillard's, not far from the food court). On top of that, the OP and the girl in Sephora sound none too thrilled about her work anyway. This lady is probably another reason women with naturally thick brows are running around with a 5 o'clock shadow on their foreheads in the attempt to thin them out.

I've only been in this industry for 11 years, I would never put someone down to build them up. Beauty is a touchy subject. I reserve that judgement for "friend-mode", not the job. Maybe if she was a little less harsh, people would be chasing her down instead of her stalking the escalators.

Yep, good customer service/professionalism goes hand in hand in every industry not just beauty. Who wants to fork over there hard earned money and get treated like crap in exchange
nope.gif
?

I think the threading lady should of made the focus of her "convo" with me or any other customers she may of have offended about her services and what she can do well. I'm more into skilled service than just running out to any old place and getting stuff done just cause some lady made a comment about my crappy brows or 'stache. Plus I'm willing to trust someone who makes me feel comfortable when it comes to things that have to do with my body and appearance. Brows are one of those things that you don't want to screw with and mess up cause they take forever to grow back in the areas you want them to grow back in

Honestly, next time you go, if she puts you down like that again, just plain out tell her you think she's being rude. She may not realize it (surprisingly so many people don't know when/why they are offending people) and she might leave you alone form then on. She also might approach people differently. I bet this kind of approach really does hurt some peoples feelings. For some girls, it doesn't take much.

ok but you can't always control how people act towards you.
I used to always come home pissed off and complain to my mom about what other people said or did. And she would always tell me you can't get upset about what other people do.. you can't control them and you can't control what they say.. why stress yourself out -why get upset??

That person doesn't really know you - so why do you care? People will be rude and have bad selling tactics til kingdom come.. so just don't let it bother you. Or you know what.. if something like this happens again say something. Say you're not interested in buying their service because their method of communication is unacceptable and move on.

I understand the whole people will act however they want to towards you. I'm not going to lie, I do get upset over these things more like annoyed actually. If I don't know the person, it's not really that big of a deal. I was just curious to as to why she tries to sell her services in that way? I'm just mostly use to being approached in a friendly manner from people. My mom walks through the mall frequently because the trolley stop she has to get off at from work is right next to it. And she has mentioned that the kiosk is practically always empty besides for the people who work there. Idk but maybe the way shes treating potential customers is affecting her business?
